What could be the problem?

by Twilight_Princess, Nov 29, 2007 06:08PM
I tried posting this in the "ask the doctor" forum, but I guess it's already filled it's quota for the day so I guess I'll ask this here.

I had my hormones tested, again, because I started losing more hair than my normal. Anyway, my free & weak testosterone and the free & weak percentage testosterone were elevated - what could possibly cause this? My total serum testosterone is normal. Has anyone ever heard of this happening to a woman with the testosterone? My endocrinologist says it could be because I am in peri-menopause, but I've searched the Internet and I find NOTHING on why a women's testos. levels would be so high.

Also, I noticed my free T4 is low - could this be an onset of Hypo?

I will list my recent blood work below:

Testosterone, serum - 25 -   (range 14 - 76 ng/dL)
Testost, % Free & Weak - 38.4 *HIGH*   (range 3.0 - 18.0 %)
Testost., F&W Bound - 9.6 *HIGH*  (range 0.0 - 9.5 ng/dL)
TSH - 1.247 (range 0.470 - 4.200 uIU/mL)
Free T4 - 0.85 *LOW* (range 0.75 - 2.00 NG/DL)

Follicle Stimul. hormone - 8.5 (IU/L)
  *Reference range
  *Adult Male 1.6 - 18.1 IU/L
  *Adult Female
  *Follicullar 1.5 - 11.4 IU/L
  *Ovulatory 5.1 - 34.2 IU/L
  *Luteal 1.1 - 8.4 IU/L
  *Post Menopausal 27.6 - 132.9 IU/L

Luteinizing hormone 3.52
  *Reference range
  *Adult Male (>50 years old) 2.0 - 18.0 IU/L
  *Adult Female
  *Follicullar 0.8 - 9.8 IU/L
  *Ovulatory 17.5 - 49.0 IU/L
  *Luteal 0.6 - 10.8 IU/L
  *Post Menopausal 30.0 - 72.6 IU/L

Prolactin - 7.2 (range 3.0 - 19.0 ng/ml)
  *Reference range
  *Male 3.0 - 16.0 ng/ml
  *Female
  *Non -pregnant 3.0 - 19.0 ng/ml
  *Pregnant 10.0 - 185.0 ng/ml

I know some might say PCOS, but I don't have that, but I do have an enlarged left ovary with a large cyst 3.9 cm and a 2.1 cm cyst on my right ovary.

I am just curious if anyone has ever heard of this with the testosterone levels, and if this could be a sigh of Hypo? I can't seem to get answers from my Endo.

Thanks
