What happens if highest level of medications for hypothyroidism is reached?

by cole716, Jan 02, 2009 09:31PM
Hi all, I have hypothyroidism and docs have been trying to control it with levlthyroxine but every 6-8 months my levels go nuts again, right now I am at 8.83 which is the worse it has ever been and boy do I feel it and med increased to 175 mcg.  Needless to say I feel awful most of the time now but I keep moving.  Finally prim. doc is sending me to endo doc. I think it might be adrenal fatigue but I am not the doc but I will mention it to endo and ask him to check my coritsol levels.  My question is what happens when I hit the highest dose possible which I believe is 300 mcg (see rxlist.com/synthroid-drug.htm chart reads 175 mcg to 200 mcg then 300 mcg).  At the rate I am going will not take long to get there and that scares me.

Someone posted a while back that she was taking 800mcg, and she WAS freaking out.

Look for deficiencies, check your adrenals, and take it as it comes. I doubt you will keep increasing the dose forever. You certainly won't automatically jump from 200mcg to 300mcg.

Maybe 175mcg will do you fine for a long time. Maybe your dosage will drop. It's hard to say.

Best of luck.

I has a total thyroidectomy due to nodules/cancer four years ago.  I am finally on my "level dose" as of about a year ago.  My dose settled at 212.5 mcg per day.  To take this I am prescribed 200 mcg and 1/2 of a 25 mcg dose of Synthroid.  Feel good!  TSH is where it should be and most joint pains, etc. are gone.  Now I'm working to loose the weight I added while being hypo!
