What to expect after a right thyroidectomy today?

by mcdata, Jun 20, 2008 05:17PM
Hi all,
I had my surgery today and it was benign my follow up is the first week of July.I am relieved.
I am sore especially when I swallow. The doctor sent me home with Lortab. Does anyone have any other suggestions for the soreness? What else should I expect post op? Do doctors usually put you on medication for the thyroid? I forgot to ask the doctor some of these question.
Thank you,
Ann

hiya!

I'm so glad your pathology was benign! are you home already?! i had a lot of soreness when i swallowed post op (now it just hurts when i yawn or sneeze!) stick to eating soft foods for the first couple of days and take pain relief as neccesary.

Did you have a partial thyroidectomy? if so they don't usually start you on meds straight away - they will prob check your blood levels in the next couple of weeks - you might not even need meds, but i know some people do :)

get plenty of rest and look after yourself - take it easy you deserve it!

Loads of love Helen x x x

Yes. I just got home. I was this doctors last case today I am very hungry and somewhat groggy. I'm having a hard time typing.
I did have a partial. The right lobe was removed.
Thank you for your support.

20% of partials cause the other side not to function again.  My symptoms started 2weeks post op after the natural stores were depeleted.  I was told 20% by my Dr. .. prior to surgery was told "probably won't need meds" ....

Lortab works wonders so I have heard from my kidney stone friends ... I've lucked out and not had to take it.

My neck was more sore than anything .. muscle type of sore for about a week.

i had a total thyroidectomy about 6 weeks ago...take it EASY and drink a ton of fluids.  this helped me sooo much.  it was much easier to drink without a straw (i still choke a little when i use a straw).  just take little sips.  for me, anytime i would swallow, it would induce a choking episode, so i found that to drink, i would take a sip, exhale and then swallow...i worked out quite the system lol.  the sore throat went away pretty quick, but u will be sore for a little while, so just hang in there! and try to not hold your head in one place, it will kill your neck!!!!

So, it is sore from the incision or on the inside from the surgery?

It is sore when I swallow. It is not as bad now. I took some ibuprofen this am and it seemed to work well.  The incision still feels numb on the outside around the glue.
I have been trying to drink a lot of fluids and rest but it is hard for me to I'm ready to start back exercising and I know I can't.

They have cut nerve endings; the numbness usually disappears.  The soreness inside goes away pretty fast except if you exert yourself too much .. the inside stitches take upwards of 6+ weeks to disolve!
