What will happen to me going off thyroid meds before RAI

Can anyone tell me what to expect while being off my thyroid pill this 2 weeks before my RAI treatment? Will I be able to work? How soon will I go into hypothyroidism, or will I....know nothing about this.
Also, after the pill I am supposed to stay away from people. What is it like taking the pill? Will it be ok to be alone and take care of myself...side effects?

Treatment for cancer means you will be getting a bigger dose.
That's why I was asking.
My dose was 12 microcures to kill the thyroid.
You will probably get 50 or 100.

I'm sure other members who have had the same treatment as you will chime in. Venora may have had a big dose. I'm not that familiar with her history.

Depending on how you feel and far you have to go, you may want to find someone who can drive you to your appointment. Wear gloves on the way home.

The RAI comes out in your sweat, as well as any other body fluids. An hour after you swallow the pill, you will be contaminating anything you touch for a while.

You should be able to work but it iwll take all your energy. well call it hypohell. beg your doc for thryogen shot so you dont have to go to hypohell. thryoigen is much better way to go . Its barbaric to make people go to hypohell when there is the thyroigen shot.
as for taking the pill you just take it like anyother pillI only had my food taste funny for about a month after I took it. you will be in isolation for a few days . talk to your nuclear med dept. they will have all the guidelines for you.

What is the RAI for, exactly?

I had to be off meds for six weeks, and it was no fun.

Two weeks will not be as bad, but you will feel Hypo to some degree. You will probably be able to work, but everyone is a little different.

Taking the pill is nothing, and you shouldn't feel significantly worse for taking it. Whether or not you can fend for yourself depends on how sick you get being off your meds.

I was sick enough from being off my meds that I am glad I had someone to cook for me, and bring me stuff. I was able to get showered and to the bathroom and such, but I spent most of the time in bed resting.

How long you need to be in isolation depends on how big a dose of RAI they give you. Ask your doctor about that.

The general rule of thumb is if you get between 12 and 18 microcures, you need to be in isolation three or four days.
If you get 50 or 100 microcures, you may need to be in isolation a week or longer and then still be careful not to be around certain people for another week.

Make sure you drink LOTS of water for a few days after the treatment, and find some sour candy to suck on to keep flushing out your salivary glands.

Good luck.
