When is too big dangerous

In 2007 I went to the ER because I was feeling ill, they found I had a enlarged thyroid.  Went to Endo, they did an ultra sound, and a FNA.  The FNA came back normal......Had another ultra sound and FNA last week, FNA came back normal.

From 5/22/2007- 5/14/20010 my ultra sound has varied.

Results 2007:

The right thyroid lobe measures 4.7x1.5x1.8cm.  The left lobe measures 5.0x2.2x2.5cm. They throid Isthmus is 6mn in thicknewss.  At least 10 solid hpoechoic avascular nodules mesuirng 1cm or less are noted within both lobes of the thyroid gland, including several nodules which have coalesced in the interior left lobe. No Microcalcifications are seen.
IMPRESSION:  Features consisten with multinodular goiter.

Results 2010:

The thyroid gland is diffuesly heterogeneous. The right lobe measures 5.2x2.1x2.2cm. There is a solid, hypoechoic avascular nodule at the junction of the isthmus and right thyroid lobe which measures 1.0x0.5x0.8cm.  Ther3e is a lower pol solid nodule which is mildy heterogeneous and hypovascular which measusres 1.6x1.2x1.1cm

The left measures 6.5x2.9x3.1cm. There is a large nodule which is replacing most of the left thyroid lobe, within the mid to lower pole, which is heterogenous and contains small cystic spaces and internal vascularity, measuing 5.1x2.6x3.1cm. Ther3e is a solid, hypoechoic nodule at the junction of the isthjus and left lobe, measuign 1.3x0.9x1.0cm.

The isthmus measures 0.7cm in thickness

** My concern, this goiter is slightly uncomfortable, but I rather deal with the uncomfort then to have surgey, am I making a wise decision.  Wil this thing (goiter) continue to grow and take over my entire throat.  Do I have a better chance living with it, or dying without it.  Meaning, how do I avoid the deperession, and mood swings I've  heard about.  Or the fact that I am already over weight, and will gain more without  a metabolism......I'm scared, mother of two and don't know what to do.....doctors are letting me decide......has this goiter already gotten too big, or when is too big dangerous( it has already grown 1.5cm on my left and 0.5 cm on my right in 3 years) ?

The left lobe measures 5.6 x 1.7 x 1.7 cm. Lower pole solid nodule is seen measuring 2.0 x 1.5 x 1.7 cm. The right lobe measures 4.9 x 1.6 x 2.1 cm. Upper pole complex nodule is noted measuring 1.9 x 1.4 x 1.4 cm.

The isthmus measures 1.1 mm....I have my fine needle biopsy on the 9th .

Hi denisefive5,

This is an old thread and many of the original posters are no longer active on this forum.  If you have a question, please feel free to post a new question - this is an active community and someone will probably respond to a new question.

That being said, I wish you the best of luck with your biopsy.   Most thyroid nodules are not cancerous but it is good that you are getting yours checked out.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to post new questions.

I had a goiter at 16 years old, cancerous.  It had been there a year.  It never hurt, just uncomfortable.  I am 40 and get a check up every year along with  a thyroid panel, blood test. The cancer got into my lood strem.   I have a scar in the front on my neck, you can not see it at all.  just a sugesstion., I wish I would have never waited.  The doctor said if I would have taken care of this early, it might not have develped into cancer.  Dont' wait too long.

The goiter will not go away on its own.  Is your doctor recommending a TT? There are a lot of people on this forum who have had TT and do very well on replacement hormones afterward.  There are also those of us whose thyroids have been destroyed by autoimmune diseases; we, too do very well on replacement hormones.

I'm sure one of them will chime in with some help.

From my experience: I too, had a multinodular goiter that was diagnosed in 2007, however my gp noticed the goiter 10yrs before that and never sent me for testing other than bloodwork. My new gp did send me for testing (sono, scan which led tobiopsy) due to a cold/solid nodule. Mine was 3.5(2009) and grew to 3.7cm(2010)

Although my fna biopsies (3) were all normal, i was recommended to have surgery due to the goiter enlarging and the abnormal cells (hurthle and Follicular) possible being cancerous undetected or the possiblility of growing cancerous. I hesitated for about 6mos after 3 opinions and went ahead and had the TT. I'm dealing with some issues that come with not having a thyroid but i'd rather not have one then to have to worry about issues that i can't change with one.

IN your case, it's growing and you are developing more nodules (solid) at that. Solid is not good and will not disappear on it's on. I'm assuming that you are under the care of a Endocrinoloist?? If I were you, i'd have at least 2 more opinions.  What were the specific fna results??
