I was taking 3000 mgs/day of Oscal 500 +D, plus Calcitrial, rightafter my TT for about 2 months until my calcium levels stabilized.
You've recently had surgery right?
You are not risking your health by taking this much Calcium. In fact if you don't take it you will be. It is common for the parathyroid glands to be bruised or damaged during surgery (they are found within the thyroid gland). The parathyroid glands are responsible for maintaing adequate levels of calcium in the body - when bruised or damaged they can't do this properly. Sometimes this is temporary and sometimes this is permanent - time and more blood tests will tell.
Hypocalacemia (low calcium) results in hyperexcitability of nerves, you get 'pins and needles', spasms, tetany and fits when it gets very bad. Calcium plays a important role in heart function too - too little and you could get a life threatening arrhythmia. This is why they usually put you in Intensive Care or keep you in a postoperative unit for awhile after surgery - hypocalacemia can be life threatening.
Hypercalacemia (high calcium) can cause weakness (but you are likely to have this post-op anyway so don't worry), nausea and vomitting, constipation and over the long term maybe kidney stones. Really high levels of Calcium can also cause arrhythmias of the heart. If you get nausea and vomitting out of the blue then delay your calcium tablets and contact your doctor immediately.
Remember even though you are taking large doses you are not absorbing the entire tablet each time. Reccomendations on the labels for Calcium tablets would probably be much more conservative that the dose you are taking because they are usually taken to treat osteoporosis (while parathyroid glands are intact). Totally different reasons for treatment.
Keep taking your Calcium until directed otherwise.

Same here...I was on 2000mg of calcium + calcitrol for several weeks after my surgery and was slowly weaned down so that I was pretty much done by 4-6 weeks afterward.
