Worried and waiting

I have had a thyroid ultrasound done. The results have shown I have a very enlaged thyroid gland and a few nodules. My doctor has referred me to a surgeon for a FNA. My famaily doctor said it should be done within 2 weeks. This is 3 weeks and I have not even been called for a appointment. I am worried sick. I have had graves disease before and hyperthyroidism. My last blood test showed completley normal funtion. How long should I wait before I call? I would like to enjoy my summer. I understand docs are overloaded but not knowing for a patient is hell.

You should definitely make a phone call yourself.  You must be your own health advocate!!  The sooner you get it done, the sooner you know what you need to do.
Best of luck.

I'm not really sure why your family doctor said the FNA should be done within 2 weeks?

You definately should phone and enquire about when they want it done.

The facts are that 95% of thyroid nodules are benign - not cancerous!  The statistics are on your side so don't worry too much!!!

The fact that you currently have normal function is fantastic!!!  **IF** surgery is recomended this fact will mean a smoother ride for you.

Surgery is usually only recommended if;
- malignancy is found or highly suspected
- the enlargement is causing compression symptoms
- for cosmetic reasons as the goitre becomes more visible.

Best wishes
