Would one day without meds make me feel like this?

My doc had me go a day without my MMI to see if that was the cause of the burning sensation I am experiencing at the base of my throat.  So I went back as prescribed today, and yes the discomfort is there again.  They want to change meds if this is the cause.  I'm not sure about the PTU and I'd actually rather wait to change anything until after my next round of blood work ... just to see if the MMI is making a difference or not.

Back to my original reason for my post.  I am having a rather hyper day today and I was wondering if one day without my meds would cause this.  I don't think it will, especially since it took a while for me to notice a difference to begin with.  I  took my beta blocker and vitamins as usual yesterday but cut the beta blocker in half today.  My BP and pulse are fine but I feel very jittery.  As an example, I keep having to backspace and make corrections because my hands are going so fast.  I'm tired though this is one of the most relaxed days I've had in some time.  I have a heaviness in my chest but I feel that is more a case of heartburn than anything else.  Nothing has really changed in my diet either, except perhaps haven eaten less.  Can one day without meds do this or am I just having a hyper day?

Well I  have to disagree.. This is my first full day off of tapazole 5 mg in 10 yrs. I'm jittery, short of breath, and my skin feels crawly. But I suppose everyone reacts different.

Ok, vacation is done :(.  I saw my Endo yesterday & she explained the jittery feeling I was having when I would lay down.  It had to do with the beta blocker and all should get better as the beta blocker has been reduced now that my pulse has dropped dramatically.  She also said that I didn't need to watch what I ate in relation to the iodine, at least not at this point.  I asked about the Free T3 test and she said she didn't like to use it because the results were dependant upon what else was going on in the body such as mensus, etc.  This didn't make much sense to me, especially since she also said the current T3 went up because I had just started the day before the test.  Anyway, I will see what the new results are on Monday and go from there for the next visit.

I hope everybody had a great week & weekend.

Lets see, where do I begin.

Regarding the "heartburn" and beta blockers ... I was experiencing the heartburn from the first week of starting the MMI.  I didn't start the beta blockers until my fourth week of meds.  The heartburn got worst when I increased the dose of MMI.  I understand the point made and it is possible but I do not feel it is the only reason for my discomfort.  I occasionally have the heaviness in my chest.  My husband said heart attack but it wasn't.  It wasn't that severe and there were no other symptoms.  I took my zantac and about 30 minutes later I took two tums.  I had one little burp.  The discomfort eased up after a little while.  It is really odd.

My blood pressure has averaged 129/80 with a pulse of 72 for the last week (with beta blockers).  30 days before that it was averaging 143/95 with a pulse of 105 (mostly without beta blockers).  The 90 day average was a little higher 146/100 with a pulse of 128 but this was without any medication.  These are the averages.  Granted some days were higher and some lower.  The odd thing is that it seems as though I am still experiencing the high rate and pulse at times but when I check them they are within the normal range or low.  Is this simply the "hyper-ness" of hyperthyroidism?  It wasn't the same as the heart flutters or palpitations.  It was more like a busy feeling running through me.

It can't be the bowels.  They are more on the hypo side of things.  I'm actually having to take supplements just for them to work.  Aarrgghhhhhhhhh!

I am curious of another thing though ... you've seen my results and my labs are coming down (slowly) except for the T3.  Yes, I know.  I need to push for the FT3.  But still, why wouldn't the T3 come down instead of go up.

My days start off ok.  By the late afternoon I am wearing down and by 9:00 I am ready for bed.  (Yes, getting up at 4:30 will add to this but I used to do this and stay up til midnight with no problem, even before the hyperness.)  Is this from the MMI bringing my hyperness in check or is it the beta blocker or the combination.  I try to take my meds around the same time each day.

Back to my test results ... tell me, from your own experience and from others you have seen here, aren't they average to low for hyperthyroidism?  I know they are enough to indicate treatment is necessary but I don't feel they are excessive.  I will have more blood work done on Friday and should know on Monday how things are looking.

I havne't had an MRI done, only the ultrasound, scan, x-rays of spine and nuclear medicine on my gall bladder (they confirmed no iodine).  The only iodine I consume would be in food.  Yes, I have developed an increase in the desire for salt.  I look green vegetables and do eat seafood (shrimp is favorite) at times.  I haven't been told to limit or avoid anything.  Truthfully, I have noticed that when I have these things I am a little more hyper the next day but not enough to worry about.  It mainly as though I have a little more energy.   Nothing has been to the extreme where I felt I needed emergency care.  I would definitely go if I did.

Sorry for the book ;) but thanks for listening.  Oh, I'm on vacation this week so feel free to send me a private message as I might not be in much to visit the board.  I can get emails with me where ever I am.  I think I'm going to have a moonlit walk on the beach with my husband tonight ............ :).  ta-ta

I am curious to know if you had an MRI done?

If it was an MRI and you were injected with iodine, that may be what's sending you into hyper too.

Anything with a form of iodine in it will react and bring on hyper symptoms for a patients. Even a dinner of shrimp - if iodine sensitive will bring on the jitters.

One day without Methimazole can do this especially when you were Hyper to start with and the Methimazole was keeping the symptoms at bay.
With hyper....the meds need to be consistant.
As I have said in recent postings.....watch Hyperthyroidism as with anti-thyroid meds you can be on one he11 of a rollercoaster ride.
To me...sounds like the MMI isnt doing what it is supposed too and the 30mg you are daily needs to be increased or permanant treatment.
if MMI doesnt fix your hyperthyroidism then neither will PTU.

Before I had RAI, if I ever forgot my 'first morning dose' of MMI , my heart would be racing like crazy by 10am.
Take the beta blockers regulary but in 'spaced out doses' like I said to avoid dizziness.
Its important for you to get those levels done as it seems the MMI isnt working too well or you just may need to be on 40mg daily.
It may be that you are using your bowels regularly (because of hyepr) that the MMI isnt actually absorbing into the bloodstream but truthfully...I dont think it will be long before the Endo suggests permanant treatment.
Youve not had much luck from day one, have you? :(

One more thing.....if the heart rate continues to go over the 100 mark......even with taking beta blockers...be prepared for a trip to the hospital.
Watch for thyroid storm......symptoms are confusion, 100% raw anxiety, speech slurred, racing heart (over 140 bpm) and just totally 'out of it'.

Dont mess around with hyperthyroidism.
if in doubt , get to the ER.
Better to be sure than wait.
Hugs x

One day without thyroid meds will not bring on symptoms, thyroid meds take some time to show a difference in labs, as you know 6 weeks apart, however if you are on BP meds (Beta Blockers) Most BP medication causes the valve from the esophagus to the stomach to relax and lets acid/fumes to rise in the esophagus, this brings on Tightness and pain in your chest (Acid Reflux), which is the reason you have heartburn, the thyroid can cause the  heart rate to go up and down, I usually have an increased heart rate with Hashimoto's, it runs between 80 and 100 BPM.  Good Luck FTB4
