ablated thyroid - with enlargement

Ok brain pickin time people.

How can a person whom has had RAI and ablated a thyroid gland still get thyroidtitis? I for the life of me would like a logical answer to this.

The thyroid hangs down - yet the swelling is where the thyroid should be???????

what could the swelling be if the thyroid is a limp rag that hangs way below where it should be?

My sea salt says it has no iodine.

Hi Stella- I do know that the hashi antibodies don't go away...they can go into a sort of remission. As long as you have tissue there, I think the antibodies can and will attack.
I agree with 898 that the iodine consumption could possibly be an irritant or allergy. When was the last time you had a scan to make sure you don't have any new thyroid tissue growth? That would make more sense since you have inflammation in the thyroid.
I get the inflammation all the time from hashi's but it isn;t a goiter...my thyroid is iodine sensitive when I consume too much too.....I think you have tissue being attacked by hashi's.

The level of antibodies can go up and down on its own;
The sea salt and shellfish may contain different amount of iodine; but I cannot figure anything else on this point to explain swelling after eating of seashell;allergy perhaps?

Thanks again 898

but when I recently started on a regimen of sea salt and water to decrease the swelling -- it works.

The sea salt is iodine right? and the other odd thing is when I eat shellfish (more than I should) the swelling pops up again too. that is iodine too right?

So if I understand correctly the Hashi thryoiditis antibodies are still present and until they die off I will have this occassionally?

What could they be attacking if the thyroid is ablated?

Say your thought in other words - maybe brain fog is over me today. but I am just not processing well.

Just a wild guess:
Some cells of the thyroid were changed by chronic thyroiditis to such point so they were no longer absorbing iodine [as we aware, the inflammed cells are not absorbing iodine, that is why RAIU  is low during the inflammation stage of thyroiditis.
As a result the RAI therapy was not efficient to destroy these changed cells
On the other hand these cells may still be recognized by immune system which tries to destroy them again and causing some sort of inflammation.

Could it be the Hashi antibodies?
