Follicular Carcinoma

I am facing this as well myself. I have my surgery on June 5th- for possible Follicular Carcinoma...My FNA is showing groups of Follicular Cells, and the doctor said the only to be sure is to take it out. Both Thyroids enlarged and one single solid nodule about 3cm . the doctor said not to worry that most are non-cancerous but because of the follicular cells and already enlarged lymph nodes you cannot be safe enough.

Can you tell me if you had a FNA and if so did it show this before your surgery.

Take Care,

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Hi Pam
My FNA results came back inconclusive or follicular neoplasm and was told wont know for sure until surgery.Had TT last Dec 12th and turned out to be follicular thyca although my surgeon said it did not look like cancer during the operation the final pathology results a week later confirmed it.I had a 2.8 cm cold nodule.Turned out to be stage one and very minimally invasive.Friend of mine just went through the same thing and his came back as follicular cancer as well.We are both males and therefore more likely that our nodules are cancerous but odds are still greatly in your favor.Try not to worry.Either way you will be ok!

My FNA came back suspicious/follicular neoplasm about 2cm.  It is my understanding that it is not the cells alone that is considered cancerous but in follicular/hurthle cell neoplasm(tumors) these cells would need to invade the capsule of the nodule and my also invade the thyroid vessels for it be considered malignant.  I have tried to inquire why this is for these types of cells, but for paillary they considered malignant as soon as the find the cell in the nodule.  I got an answer...but it was not in laymans terms so I still don't understand it.  I went in for a lobectomy on march 19.. Had left lobe and isthmus removed and one lymph node (looked suspicious).  Frozen section came back benign. I did have Hurthle cells which was fully encapsulated (did not invade the capsule of nodule or vessel of thyroid), therefore considered benign both in frozen section and final pathology.  The wait is the hardest...not knowing is the hardest!!!!
