It is my understanding that it is standard practice to see if the nodules were cancerous for certain. My FNA came back suspicious for papillary cancer and I didn't find out for sure that I had cancer until the final pathology report came back 2 days after my TT. It is necessary to see if the nodules were cancerous to determine what course of treatment is needed after surgery...i.s. is RAI necessary?
It is my understanding that they biopsy everything that they remove. It's the main reason I had the TT... FNAs were not showing any cancer but some doctors were concerned that I DID have metastatic follicular cancer with my Tg levels being so high... and the only way to know was to take the whole darn thing out. I also had lots of nodules and when final pathology came back benign I asked how accurate that was (FNAs are like 95% accurate) and the Dr. said it was 100% accurate b/c they look at everything.
Hope that helps.

Thanks!
My biopsy was done on 2 nodules which was negative but now I have 8 nodules so I was hoping they would biopsy again.
