biopsy results help

I have a nodule that has grown 30% in the past year. My FNA results were smears and cell block: -atypical - cannot exclude a Hurthle Cell Neoplasm - specimen consists predominantly of Hurthle Cells with Nuclear enlargement and rare atypia.
I was recommended to a surgeon for removal of the thyroid. What do these results mean? What could the final diagnosis be? Is it or is it not Hurthle Cell? My reading suggests these cells are distinctive. Your info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your response. I am scheduled for a total thyroidectomy. I have one other nodule on the other side that has changed appearance on ultrasound in the past year- it is just under a cm. I just wonder what the possible diagnosis could be... I find if I have more information I worry less.
Hope you are recovering well.

I jus had a total thyroidectomy on thursday after watching and waiting for two years due to hurthle cells neoplasm on one side and follicular cells on the other...although the fna's showed benign..cancer cannot be ruled out so i was told by 3 different opinions that it was best to remove the thyroid. Hurthe Cells can be normal, however if they are cancerous they can grow to other organs, therefore it's recommended to do surgery. Did the doc recommend total or partial thyroidectomy???

Sounds to me like you need to talk to the surgeon. You will know for sure when they send the tissue off to pathology if it is cancer. The good news is that thyroid cancer (most) are very easily treated.
