I think a term you might want to look up is 'iatrogenic.'  That's when one medical condition can come about as a result of the inappropriate treatment of another medical condition.  It applies to thyroid treatments when, say, someone is diagnosed with hypothyroidism, takes a medication that is too high a dose and the result is hyperthyroidism.  It's a confusing term because it seems so similar to what a side-effect would be.  But a side-effect is when someone is on the appropriate treatment and another yet another medical condition comes about (this can happen for example with cancer treatments).

I wish I could find a really good article I was reading on this subject, but for now I recommend doing a search on that particular term.

Good luck.

You have to start by being your own advocant and really know what the tests and what the meds are doing for you.

I really feel the best indicators of trying to level correctly on thyroid problems are utilizing the TSH and the FREE T3 and Free T4 labs together. Some really have to push hard to get the right labs done to precisely KNOW exactly what is happening with decreases and increases of meds and if another drug either assisting the meds your on or switching to other meds is to your benefit.

A wind range of blood work should be done too - to really tell if a deficiency is causing your condition keeping you feeling lousy.

If you are left with "getting by" on your thyroid hormone and not achieving the optimal level for you for a long time - other important glands can become tired and start to back fire too. Then you have multiple problems which takes the healing even longer to get back to feeling well again.

Bennie - There are many here with medical backgrounds - by I do not. If you take a look at my journal on my profile titled I thought I was dying - you'll see the reason why I am a part of this board. I am the Leader over on the adrenal board - Co Leader here and I visit Complementary Med often. The other Co Leader here - Laura oversees the Comp Med board.

My horror started with thyroid - so I really find this place home for me.

stella,hi,I cant help but notice..your on many..many topics..with  many replys..seems every board...you have experience in that topic..or maybe its me...
add Lisa..you 100% can get it from takin to much thyroid...T3 (cytomel) is weirdly used in the bodybuilding world..as well as hollywood,to lose weight, the normal being up to 75-100mcgs a day..and they taper down...slowy  so thyroid goes back to normal,I have seen many people need meds ,from doing this...

Autoimmune Grave's disease can not be caused by Synthroid. Over induced medication will cause hyper symptoms.
