I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism last summer....after my doctor spent years telling me I was crazy...my ultrasound showed a very enlarged thyroid...looked like cauliflower...with a possible nodule...I took radioactive iodine for it....when I went back my levels were 6 and she wanted it at 5...we waited another week...took more blood and it was at 52...so I was put on a dose of 100...they tested again and said it was high again...so they lowered it to 75...I stayed on the 100m because i do not want the weight gain...well they now tell me I need to go on the 75 because I will never feel normal til I do...will someone tell me what normal will be? I am scared to switch...altho I myself think I am very flighty and irrational on the 100...how do you keep from gaining weight? I missed my meds for 3 days and gained like 10 lbs...cannot take it off  ..please tell me what normal feels like....been a long time

This discussion is related to TSH 13.9 T3 and T4 Normal. Been prescribed 88 mcg Synthroid is this OK?.

Your doctor sounds like your biggest problem.

Your TSH needs to be around 1.0 or 1.5, NOT 5.0.

Your Free T4 and Free T3 need to also be in the proper range, and I seriously doubt your doctor knows what that is.

Forget about the weight gain and look at the big picture.

If you go hyper because of medication it will make you ill and could damage your body.

If you stay hypo you will have the same results.

You need to get your blood checked six weeks after every med change, and keep looking for a TSH close to 1.0, and a Free T4 and Free T3 about two thirds up the scale of of the lab range printed on your test.

And you need your own copy in a file at home, so you can look at it rather thn having the doctor tell you that everything is normal.

Do that, get your hormones right, wait a few months, and you will feel much better. Those who gain weight are almost the ones that are held at a hypo level for months or years by ignorant doctors.

Best of luck, welcome to the board.
