depression caused by thyroid?

Has anyone ever had depression come up because of their thyroid.  I thought someone on this board told me that sometimes the thyroid issue can cause you to have issues from your past that were never resolved come up and then I don't know what happens.  I have had this happen to me about a month ago.  I was do pretty good waiting for my thyroid to come down to normal which it did. It came down to 3.5 and then anxiety and depression hit and I had my thyroid checked and it had gone back up to 5.6 and the endo started me on 50 mg of levothyroxine on Sun and the rest of the days on 37.5.  It has come down after 3 weeks to 4.4 which is just under the wire (.40-4.5).  I have since this happened gone back to my holistic doctor and he is giving me L-5HTP and SAMe for the depression.  I have been taking it about 2 weeks.  I am also taking a lot of supplements two of which reacted and I had suicidal thoughts for about a few hours until the effects of the pills wore off.  He called me and said that it was the B6 that we too much and to stop it.  Also he really racked me over the coals and said I had to stop the negative thoughts in my head and get a hold of myself and chill chill chill.  He said I would not die from the depression and my body was going through a lot of physical changes and he was giving me stuff that would help me to get through.  But I had to work on getting in charge of my mind.

At first I was really mad at him and kind of in shock that he would talk to me that way.  I really had been having awful thoughts of not wanting to live and had to really push them out because ofcourse I want to live.  I am taking therapy called theopostic prayer which is wonderful but it is hard and it can make you feel worse for atime as you are dealing with very deep things in your inner most being but I am making progress but it is really hard to try to keep the negative thoughts out.  He taught me breathing methods to help to push them out and it does help and I feel the Lord told me it would be about 6 weeks to clear up the depression and about a year with the therapy.  He has been faithful in the past during the thyroid stuff to keep his word.  I know a lot of people might not believe what I am saying but thats ok.  God works in many ways with all of us.   I guess my question to any of you is have you had this terrible depression and what is your encouragement for me.  I am not taking an antidepressent but these two supplements which are amino acids and hormone to stimulate the brain with seratonin and the SAMe does something with the transmitters, I believe.
You are havehelped me so much and I am up in the middle of the night, not sleeping of course.  I am still taking 1 mg. of lorazapam ordered by my holistic doctor 3 times a day.  It helps but not like it used to when I had only the anxiety.  I truly believe that I am getting better but the depression is really hard to control.  I did it yesterday with the breathing and taking my supplements and just doing my normal life things.  I know God promises to give me the strength everyday that I need and I just have to make it one day at a time.  I hope it is ok with you guys that I wrote all this out as it seems to keep my mine clear and than waiting for the answers are something to look forward to.  Thank you for your comments.  They always are uplifting. and help me to get through the days until the total freedom comes from this depression.    linda

hi linda,
i get majorly depressed when im hypo. im fine the rest of the time, never taken any anti-depressants or anything for depression. when my tsh was 6 i wanted to die (and thought about making it happen). when my tsh is above 2 i get really really really depressed. i only feel good when its somewhere between 1 and 2.
now im fine and happy! (although maybe only a tiny bit on the anxious side...)
i think Dr. Lupo on this forum suggests a tsh of around 1 or 2 (cant remember, you'd have to check that one...), although tsh is always different for everyone.

do you have any hypo symptoms other than depression?
hope this helps you, and dont worry too much, everything will get sorted out and you will get better. it will take time but its good that you are doing your best to help yourself get better!

Idon't know how you do it with out any medication.  I am taking lorazapam.  I think that I have issues from my past and the thyroid is now bringing them up.  I still think it from the thyroid because my tsh is still on the high normal.  I am weak in my legs, probably from fear I don't know what other symptoms I might have because this seems to take priority.  It am also changing my diet because of the celiac that I was diagnosed with.  I am doing rather well on that.  It is just the fear from the depression that is so awful.  The doctor told me to get my mind straight and push out the thoughts and I did it yesterday.  With the help of the Lord I will do it today.  I just don't look forward to fighting myself all day long.  I wish it woudl hurry and get over with.  Thanks for your encouragement.    linda

I hate to here you are having such a rough time.  Keep depending on the Lord He will see you through.  I have suffered with depression and anxiety all my life.  Its one of those things you do have to fight.  The mind is a very powerful thing.  Try to keep control of it.  Its gets hard trust me but you can do it!!!!!!!  I know you can.  One day at a time.  Thats how I get through even with medication.  Prayers Jessi

I have been there!  When I was extremely hypo my depression hit HARD!  My daughter was diagnosed with bipolar and when she had her thyroid condition regulated most of those symptoms disappeared.  When my son was diagnosed as depressed the first thing the psychiatrist did was check his thyroid levels.

I am on Celexa for the depression.  Many on this forum have had to go on antidepressants for the depression.  The thyroid can REALLY cause havoc with your brain chemistry.

Hi hon
You are going through adrenal hormones like crazy whilst you are in this state. I know, I am with you on this. You could take a good adrenal vitamin supplement to support them? B5 is supposed to be very calming and of utmost importance to the adrenals and much of your vit C is used by the adrenals too so plenty of that is good. Of course balance is the key and your other hormones will be taking up the slack for you when your thyroid hormones are low so you need to support them and get your thyroid more 'online'. If your 'ferritin' is low or your B12 and folate that will make you feel terrible as your body has trouble using what thyroid hormones you have, B12 and folate being low makes you feel rotton too.
I would ask your Dr about adrenal fatigue, and ferritin levels as well as just treating symptoms you need the root cause of your depression and anxiety treating which with me is hormonal imbalance due to years of hypothyroidism.
the LORD is with you :)
