all this started after he was put on minocycline for acne twice daily......for 7 months and he started having excessive fatigue and migraine headaches every single day and I googled it and saw other people with bad reactions and took him off of it immediately and started giving him a probiotic thinking his bacteria balance was way off.......
thank you gimel, I was a lost for that too with low ferritin, and the dr said not to worry about it since he had iron and hemoglobins came back in line but no explanation why is the ferritin low. he fasted including water for 12 hours before test and all taken at the same time. he may had one iron supplement the week before I was hoping it was something simple as giving him iron to explain the excessive fatigue.....with little appetite....He is such a level headed, excessively smart, teenager, I am feeling a little helpless at this point....he ran a food sensitivity test with peanuts being a 3 (1-3) meaning highly sensitive so he has been off peanut a nd peanutbutter since then and he wants to put him on a 3 month elimination diet with all the 1 and 2s on the list which is eggs, milk, chicken, but I am slow to agree to that since he only likes eggs, milk, and chicken, few foods and he is not one to drink almond or coconut milk hence I already do, and he isn't lactose intolerate or gluten intolerant on test . He told him not to eat any soy products because of thyroid and he did love Asian food with soy but only ate it once or twice a week. He wants to put him on a shakes and supplements and all have to be bought from dr. He said his glucose was the upper range of normal, his cholesterol was upper range of normal and his kidney function was not as optimum as he would like it to be and I asked wasn't that from poor diet and exercise . He said yes . he wants him to walk 30 min a day which I agree. As a teenager he is a know it all and stubborn.....but I have a lot of questions and no answers.
Ferritin is a precursor to serum iron levels. When ferritin is low it is generally sign of decreasing iron levels. Having both high iron and low ferritin is unusual, to me at least. I have been looking for info on those occurring together. So far I have had no luck. I wondered if both tests were done at the same time? Has he taken anything that could have inflated his iron level?
his b12 was low 2 months ago but already in line now, his vit d okay too , he is high iron 156 out of 158 top range and low ferrin of 28 (30-400 )
Both of those could be factors. His thyroid hormone levels don't appear to be a concern, even with the high TSH. TSH is a pituitary hormone that is affected by so many things that it is a poor diagnostic.
You might test his Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin levels just to be sure those are optimal. D should be about 55-60, B12 in the very upper end of its range, and ferritin should be about 70 minimum. If either are low you could supplement those yourselves.
he is a picky eater, doesn't exercise bec he stays on the computer, but he is skinny and was found to have a sensitive to peanuts ....his favorite food peanuts and peanut butter. he has straight a in school but he was tired a lot....but I thought that could be not eating right and no exercise
TSH is a pituitary hormone that is affected by so many things that at best it is only an indicator, to be considered along with more important indicators such as symptoms, and also levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T4 and Free T3. Both Free T4 and Free T3 are at acceptable levels. Even with the high Reverse T3, the ratio of Free T3 to RT3 is also adequate. So what, if any, symptoms does he have?
TSH 6.82,
FREE T3 4.2 (2-4.4)
FT4 1.4 (.93-1.7)
T4 8.5 (4.5-11.7)
T3 146 ( 80-200)
REVT3 24 ( 8-24)
ANTI THYROID PEROXIDASE LESS THAN 10 (LESSTHN 34)
....DR said he has plenty of thyroid hormone and he has seen teenagers with elevated tsh.
what do you think?
Please post the actual test results and reference ranges shown on the lab report. Also, does your son have any symptoms that could be related to hypothyroidism?
