Kevin,
Just wondering how you are? Did your back improve at all? I went to doc complaining of back pain and ended up diagnosed with thyroid problems. Doc seems to be ignoring the back issue in favor of the thyroid.
Hope things turned out well for you.
went to endocrinolgist today.. says everthing ok..srtill waiting on pathology report. before theyll put me on a higher dose of sythriod. tired , they said ill be like this until im on the higher dose..right now on a low dose 50 .. but wont be put me on higher dose until clean report i hope. going to a cardiolgist next week .. hopefully nothing hospital cardilogist said its all probable the thyroid caused all problems.. lets hope.. hope your feeling better every day.. kevin

Hi Kevin!
I, too, am scheduled for surgery; mine is on wed the 19th. I have papillary carcinoma (cancer) and am having a total thyroid removal including many lymph nodes. I know you are scared and nervous, I know I surely am! Let's keep in touch throughout our journey and we share our experiences and info. Take care!
Cindy
Wishing you an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery.
surgurey this thurs. nervous about it still having heart papultations.. my primary thinks all these will resolve after the surgurey.. talked to a friend who had it 20 years ago ..hes doing fine says it takes a few weeks then you feeel better.. thanks for listening. kevin
Best of luck with your surgery and recovery.
got an appt. with surgeon next tue. was told today cells are precancerous and possible cancerous to remove it asap.. kevin
told today to schedule surgery .. by primary.. to take out tyroid.. cancerous and precancerous cells in tyroid.. this has been a long year... tired , exhausted..
got results from fnab today.. not good here are results:final diagnosis
thyroid gland, right lobe, lower pole, nodule, ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration.
hypocellular smears showing small aggregates of follicular cells without atypia. background colloid is noted.
impression benign colloid nodule
thyroid glang left lobe lower pole nodule ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration
moderately cellular smears composed almost exclusively of oncocytic cells with rare non oncocytic follicular cells and some background colloid.
impression cannot rule out hurtle cell neoplasm differential diagnosis includes a hurtle cell neoplasm versus extensive hurle cell change in a hyperplastic nodule.
endocronolgist recommends surgery to take out all of tyroid gland..
kevin
will a fna show results of other thyroid disorders .. do they test for these. with the biopsy? other than beningn or malignant nodules? still waiting on results. upped med for heart papultaions ttoday. doctor says they test for all those desieses even though the blood tests were normal? any idea
is there a general blood test that can be taken for the hormones not just thyroid ./.. ive haven't felt well in 10 months even though alot of the symtoms have gone? any ideas? thanks
thank you.. ill find out tommrow... today i had epidural steriod injection on my thorasic spine... (mri was how i found out about the thyroid enlargement) it was no big deal put me out was home in a couple of hours. hoping this is the beginng of the end of this health scare.. thanks for respoding.
Fingers crossed! Please keep us posted
just back from fna that wasn't fun. 2 and a half hours. 9 neadles. aspirated alot of bloody fluid out. doctor says its more likely benine. ill find out thurs. if so just going to monitor it. check every six months. .. tommrow moring steriod injections in my soine ...more fun. Kevin
going in for fna tommrow and then epidural steriod injections in my back wed. going to be a pin cushion by thurs.
thanks again for info.. went today to endocronolgist.. he send me for fna.. he says 97 pecent chance that its nothing i have no other symtoms plus 3 blood tests over 6 months show thyriod its operating normally. if it comes back normal he says it will be monitored by an ultrasound every 6 months. so now waitng for the fna appt. at hospital. thanks. kevin.. what happened in your case?
lets hope not.. over the past 10 months ive been to a bunch diff. types of doctors,. infection doctors, hospital. ect. theyve done 5 blood works, exray. mris tested for a hundred things, nothing ever showed any signs of cancer or anything else. .. last doc. thinks this is from my being ill. hopefully thats it. thanks. going today.
JLWH has great advice. One thing to add: Because you are male, the nodules are quite large, your labs are normal, and the nodules are complex they will probably discuss surgical options - regardless of the result from the FNA. FNAs *can*, sometimes find cancerous cells but quite often they miss cancerous cells (2 of my sisters had FNAs, both results were "normal" - both had cancer).
You meet quite a few of the "high risk" marks - especially being male. (sorry)
thanks for info.. it helps.. good luck with your situation. kevin
Hey Kevin....seems like your thyroid function is all normal, which is quite often the case (others in here know levels more than I do though and may add more to this info).
The fact that your nodules are fairly large, often means that more testings will be done. They may ask you to do a thyroid scan which will tell them whether the nodules are cold, warm or hot. Or, they may go directly to biopsy...which is the "Gold Standard" in testings.
I should say here though that from all that I've been reading and learning as I go along my path with nodules and testings, sizing of nodules is not necessarily a bad thing. They can also be benign but, are often the ones that they have more concern over than smaller ones. Having a FNAB (Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy) is a good thing and will likely be advised to be done. This is routine so, don't panic over that suggestion or the name "biopsy". It's all standard testings.
As far as the biopsy goes, it's done with a needle that's usually finer/smaller than the needle used to take blood samples. So, if you can handle a blood test, you can more than handle this! *smile*
Once they have the results of the biopsy, they will either continue to monitor you on a periodic basis with ultrasounds for further growth or, they will go in and do the surgery to remove part or all of they thyroid. (I am currently waiting to have surgery done by he way). They may also decide that the growths (benign or not) may need to be removed if they are too large and pressing on neck structures such as throat and breathing as Utahmom has already said.
So, relax as much as possible (easier said than done, I know) but, do make sure that you have a good endocrinologist to properly follow through with whatever is necessary to be done as Utahmom has also said. It's important to have an endocrinologist as they specialize in these types of things and are best to know "next steps" and what's needed and what's not needed.
