excess weight gain after taking antithyroid meds

by orndoc, Jun 04, 2008 06:41PM
After a year of taking methimazole and atenolol, I have gained a lot of weight, but get sick and nauseous after exercising. Is this normal, and what can I do to control my weight? I am a vegetarian and my whole life have been at an ideal weight and fitness level.

This discussion is related to medication & excercise.

How long has it been since you have had your thyroid levels checked?  I remember when I was on Methimaole, I packed on a bunch of weight pretty quickly (maybe 15-20 lbs inside 2-3 weeks) because I had swung to be hypothyroid.  A big switch from my extremely hyper state when I began the medication.

If you haven't had your thyroid levels checked in the last few weeks, I'd call your doctor and ask to be tested.
