getting to the right mix

by Evka, Dec 30, 2008 11:05PM
I am a 32-year-old female. After removal of pheochromocytomas and total neck disection I was put on 125 of Synthroid. I started gaining weight very fast (went from 137lb to 150lb within 2 months - huge deal considering that have been the same weigh +/-3 for over 8 years). I also started to become very depressed. I was switched to 112 Synthroid and 5 Cytomel. The weight stabilized at 142lb - great! However, the depression is still here, I still get tired, and my toes and fingers get uncontrollably cold lately. I also started getting slightly sick in the morning about an hour after taking the Synthroid. My last blood test showed TSH of 0.1mIU/L. I really would like to get normal blood levels as my husband and I were hoping to start a family and we were told that only when all is stabilized it is safe for me to get pregnant. What would you recommend for the next step? I  was considering the natural Armor Synthroid but was told that pre-pregnancy I should have something with a  more controllable dosage. I sincerely appreciate any thoughts.

This discussion is related to Cytomel in addition to Synthroid.

How is your free T3 and free T4?, those are more important. How is your glucose (morning) and calcium levels?, as I understood, you don't have thyroid?

Welcome to the community.  When you get your meds straightened out there is a great Weight Loss Community here that many of us here on thyroid belong to, also.

my glucose is probably fine - I never had any sugar issues. Yes - I am missing the thyroid and all the lymph nodes and 2 of my parathyroids. My T4 fro 1.3 and calcium 9.4. Don't know my T3.

The Thyroid Disorders Community is a great place to be as you work through stabilizing your medication regimen.  I have the priviledge of knowing several of the members in this community and have found them to be most knowledgeable, caring, helpful and supportive.  There is also an excellent Thyroid Tracker available as well!

I see you are struggling with some weight issues, which can be common with various thyroid disorders.  When you are ready, would love to have you join us in Weight Loss & Dieting for some fun, friendship, support and activities while we work together in a year long weight loss challenge towards a more healthy lifestyle.

Very best wishes to you .. and please shout out about various issues and stay connected with this community.  There is a little less activity right now due to the holidays.

I feel like I have my weight under control, but I do need help getting to a stable and comfortable dose of thyroid medication. I would like to be able to be pregnant soon and I would love any thoughts on the mix of Synthroid and Cytomel. Thank you.

can anybody suggest something??

I saw my endocrinologist on Friday. I am staying on the same dose: 112 Synthroid and 5 Cytomel because in general I feel fine on that and the doctor feels OK with my numbers. However the cold toes are becoming a big problem. I just went snowboarding and after a couple of runs I thought that my toes were frozen. At first they were so cold that they hurt but when I lost all feeling to them, it was just scary. They thawed out after a couple of hours in the lodge but the whole experience was just scary and unfamiliar as I have been using the same boots etc. for last 12 years and never had a problem. Does anybody else have the same "cold toe syndrome"? What do you do?
I loaded up on calcium and vitamins and bought foot warmers and with warmer weather it helped the next day but it still is not normal. even with chemical toe warmers my toes instead of being toasty were quite cold but not freezing.
Any ideas are super appreciated.
