goiters an heart problems

by hollyloxx, Nov 13, 2006 12:00AM
i have jsutbeen told after a sonogram that my thyroid is enlarged on boths side but the right is twice as big as the other.
i have 3 nodules on that side. they said that my thyroid levels are w/in the norm but very ver low. borderline too low.
i never thought anything of it, its always looked big to me.
i ws diagnosed w/ svt when i was 19 had a heart ablation same year and am staring to have problems again. this time just rapid heart rate and pounding.
i am heart meds the heart dr said my ehart is ok.
i am curious if this goiters thing  could be the cause.
i have bad anxiety now and wonder if it could all tem from this?
i am always hot or cold one or the other never in between and no matter how much water i drink am always thirsty.

the endocronologist said that he did not want to give me thyroid meds til they know what the iodine nuclear test says. beacsue the meds could make my heart more irratated thenit is already.
i would appreciate any input thanks

Hyperthyroidism can cause an increased heart rate,  Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) — commonly more than 100 beats a minute — irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) or pounding of your heart (palpitations), heat intolerance, an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), and many more symptoms.
Signs and symptoms of goiter may include Enlargement of your thyroid gland, resulting in swelling of your neck, A tight feeling in your throat , Coughing, voice changes (hoarseness), Difficulty swallowing and/or Difficulty breathing,  feel like food is getting stuck in your throat, feel like you don't want to wear turtlenecks or neckties, feel fullness in your neck, experience choking   and  shortness of breath . You may experience other signs and symptoms depending on the underlying cause of the goiter. Pain is uncommon.

I don't know anything about svt  heart ablation or if your goiter issue has relationship.  Your doctor would know.  As far as your thirst have you been checked fore diabetes?

Thyroid meds will interfere with the thyroid uptake/scan (nuclear iodine scan). So either they don't give the meds or if already on them meds have to be stopped for several weeks before the test can be done accurately. They can tell quite a lot from this test.  I had it done for Hyper/Graves' treatment.

Thirst is usually the body's signal to replace water loss, it is usually appropriate to drink plenty of liquids.  Excessive thirst is a fairly common symptom and is often the reaction to fluid loss during exercise or intake of salty foods. Thirst has nothing to do with thyroid or goiter/nodules that I am aware of, never read anything relating them together, and can be a symptom of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and can be an important clue in detecting diabetes.  Other causes such as Drugs such as anticholinergics, demeclocycline, diuretics, phenothiazines.  Also  Heart, liver, or kidney failure, Psychogenic polydipsia and more. Maybe you should teel doctors about your thirst, that is, if you haven't already.

Good Luck with the nuc test ;) (thyroid uptake/scan).

I understand  what you mean about the giving up and the crying.  But don't give up dear, you are not going crazy! Nor are you alone per se. There are a lot of people here going through issues too, who are willing to give their support to each other and to you too.
All this can be very over whelming, I know, because it is for me too, most always. Just take your time,  one step at a time - just one health issues at a time, and eventually you will get through it all.   Just keep in mind that we are not doctors, we could be wrong most of the time. So the advice given is merely suggestions, a possibility only, and as a guide to hopefully help a person on their way in the right direction. So don't let this all get you down. Anyway, the best person to listen to and follow is your doctor - but you will find us here for you too.
Cheer up dear, you are going to make it and you will be ok. ((((Hugs))))

Hey I thought I was alone in the whole heart related problems - have had tachycardiac episodes for about 3 years - even had a full cardiac workup.  Yesterday I had another episode and first the first time an ER doctor picked up on the relationship between my enlarged thyroid and the tachycardia episode.  At least someone is confirming what is going on.  Hollyloxx, I understand your frustration but hold on.  We can all support each other.  Please just hang in there.  If you need to vent - contact me.  I am having my thyroid removed in December.  Hoping some of the symptom will subside.  Take care of yourself

thanx!!
it just hard i have had heart problems taht are not relate to thyroid and its hard this time to be told that its realted this time.
does it come and go for you? there are months i feel fine then months its awful?

i had one dr tell me that i would not feel better til i got it under control. i just wish the best for you , and hope that i get this all taken care of soon!!

Clarification:  Thyroid disorders are not good on our hearts, can cause certain heart issues and dangerous to our healthy being or even worse. So in some cases they are related. I have MVP which seems to be common in thyroid disorders and some think related.  Being hyperthyroid is probably not good for my heart and this is true with some thyroid drugs as Armour and T-3 replacement.  Thyroid needs to be under control with treatments and meds to make it easier on and for our hearts to function properly, and, prevent future heart problems or make existing ones worse.

I can understand the frustration - 3 years ago I was having freuent episodes.  Now it is much less frequent.  Maybe I just don't react as much to the symptoms - sit it out and it seems to relieve itself.

I am very glad that I am having my thyroid removed (though only one side) Maybe I will be less symptomatic.  My biggest frustration is that my surgeon's office has had my chart on the scheduler's desk for 1 week and each day I call to see when the surgery is set for and I am told that I need to wait for the scheduler to call me.  My health, my life and I have to wait for someone else.  It is overwhelming at times - I am going to leave message for Dr as to my ER visit.  Maybe that might move things along.

According to this doctor with a partial thyroidectomy I will not need to be on medication.  I find that to be questionable but I know the endocronologist will be called in while I am inpatient.

Hope all works out for you too.  Funny how people find comfort with strangers with like problems rather than sometimes with the people closest to us.  My significant other really does understand the problems and he sometimes gets annoyed and just wants everytthing to "just stop".  As though we have control of these problems.  To someone who never has any ailments I guess we are just weird at times.

Take care
