having surgery for a goiter in May 2008

by nitabug325, Apr 19, 2008 09:33AM
Has anyone had this surgery and how did you do after surgery. I've never met anyone that has had goiter surgery and what to expect after surgery. They tell me surgery will take about a hour and a half, they will remove the right side because that is the side affect with the hyperthroid and goiter. I'm scared and afraid of having this surgery but again I have no choice. I know alot has to do with the surgeon and the knowledge they have performing this surgery. I was told recovery time was 2-3 weeks. I would appreciate anyone that would share with me their experience and also prayers. I know that God holds me in the palm of his hands and I trust in his will. Thanks for your replies and God Bless you all!
In Christ,
Anita

I am sorry for your distress; I  have been there.  I had a thyroidectomy--both lobes were removed.  From your post, you seem to have an overactive thyroid.  I had autoimmune disease, a goiter on the right side and a benign tumor on the right side.  I was also anxious about surgery, but I also was very concerned about the tumor which we didn't know was benign until after the pathology tests came back.  I can honestly say I came through the surgery quite well, and have done quite well without a thyroid.  My only problem now is getting my thyroid dose regulated, but that is nothing new for hypothyroid sufferers.  I realize your thyroid problem is different from mine, and your surgery will be different from mine, but  I do know how it feels to have surgery, and I do hope I have helped the least little bit.....
