Okay, that makes more sense. It's possible she does have Graves'. Perhaps she had surgery (there's usually a faint scar at the base of the neck) or RAI before you knew her??? If that were the case, she would be hypOthyroid now from the surgery or RAI.
So, we have to assume from the medication she's on that she is now hypOthyroid. Does she take her meds regularly? Have regular blood work? Thyroid meds have to be taken consistently since levels build in your blood over 4-6 weeks, so you can't just take a dose here and there and expect any benefit from it at all. In fact, taking it sporadically can be worse than not taking it at all since levels will then fluctuate, and you can end up going from hypo to hyper and back.
When you went to the doctor with her, did she indicate to him how she felt? If she still had hypo symptoms?
Depression and anxiety are very common with hypo. Does she know the cause of her hypo? Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most prevalent cause of hypo in the developed world. It's an autoimmune disease that destroys thyroid function over time. Do you suppose that's what she might have meant to tell you, rather than Graves'??? Hashi's is for the most part hypO, but in early stages, it can be characterized by swings from hypo to hyper, which could look like bi-polar.
I've never heard of compulsive lying being a symptom of any thyroid disorder.
after speaking with her a bit more about it last night I've found out she hasn't got graves disease. I'm sure she has told me she has but with a lot of other things she says she didn't. I know for a fact she has a thyroid disease because I've seen the medication and been to the doctors with her about it. but just wondering if compulsive lying is a symptom or is it just her. I have a pretty good memory and I remember everything she says and certain thing I think she must think I don't her and she tries to play the I must have heard it wrong card. she manipulates people a bit without even knowing and this is why I think she maybe bipolar I just need some answers
And is it Thyradin that she takes?
Graves' is an autoimmune disease. Has she had either surgery to remove her thyroid or RAI (radioactive iodine ablation) to kill it?
I'm trying to make sense out of the meds she's taking.
she's had an immune disorder since she was a kid. shes 23 now and has a 4 year old boy. she was diagnosed with an over active thyroid when she was pregnant and graves disease after that. that's what I've been told. all I can go off is what she had said to me so definintly over active not under active.
Do you mean that she's on Thyradin? Graves' disease is hypERthyroid, and Thyradin is a med for hypOthyroid. Are you in the U.S.?
Treating a thyroid imbalance has nothing to do with being crazy, except that thyroid imbalance can make you feel crazy. She needs to take her thyroid meds if nothing else. I agree with the previous poster...treat the Graves' disease first and see which of the other symptoms disappear.
How was she diagnosed with Graves' disease?
shes very stubborn and hard to help. I love her to pieces and it's hard seeing her self destruct. while she takes a step forward it's always followed by 2 backwards. she's on thyradian for the thyroid and prescribed diazepam and zolpidem. she has refused to take the both of them and she sometimes doesn't take her thyroid medication. she thinks if she takes those that it's her admitting she's crazy.
I would suggest that she seek help for the Graves Disease first if it is not under control. The effects of the disease will make a sane person crazy. It will do all sorts of things physically that will eventually effect them mentally.
While your girlfriend may have both Graves' and bi-polar, don't jump to any conclusions if her Graves' isn't under control. Graves' can mimic bi-polar symptoms.
Is she under treatment? I don't suppose you have recent thyroid labs to post???
