Your TSH of 5.4 is above the currently accepted reference range of 0.3-3.0.  Many labs and doctors still use an obsolete range.  In many ways, you are lucky that your doctor recognizes that this is an indication of hypothyroidism.  You should make sure that in addition to testing TSH your doctor is also testing free T3 and free T4.  These are much more important than TSH.  Do you have hypo symptoms?
