hi i am 49 yrs old
dx with hoshimoto about 2yrs ago
tsh levels not to abnormal
about 4.5  last test 3.5
dr does not have me on synthroid as of yet
TSH levels not that away from normal
question is
should i start synthroid just knowing of the hoshimoto
will it slow the progression of the auto immune disease attacking my throid

I assume you're aware that the recommended range for TSH has been revised to .3-3.0.  Both of your tests exceed the upper limit.  My opinion is that the doctor should have started you on low dose of medication already, to minimize any related symptoms you already are having,  and to help prevent others as your Hashi's progresses.  To my knowledge, med. won't slow the Hashi's, but will slow or prevent the unwanted symptoms.  Make sure the doctor starts checking your free T3 and free T4, as well as TSH, and regulates your meds. by the free T3 test, along with your symptoms.

Ditto to everything gimel said!  In all actuality, your TSH should be kept between a .50-1.0 when you have Hashi's.
