how and to whom should my follow-up be

I had a thyroid ultrasound which showed the right lobe measuring 4.9x1.7x1.8 cm.  the left lobe measures 5.1x2.2x2.4 cm.  there are 3 nodules in both lobes. in the right lobe, they all measure less than 1 cm in greatest dimension.  the largest nodule in the left lobe measures 3.2x2.4x1.3 cm.  there is a second nodule in the inferior aspect of the left lobe measuring 1.2x1.9.1 cm. the 3rd nodule measures 1.8x1.2x0.9 cm. my ent ordered the ultrasound. he called it a benign neoplasm throid.  they recommended a fine needle biopsy.  is this really necessary?  is my ENT the one I should go to for treatment or should I see an endocrinologist?  Do I have to follow up at all? thanks.

There is no way of truly detecting a beign or  cancer status on thyroid nodules without doing an FNA or FNAB. It can be speculated by shape - hot or cold DX - and halos over the nodule to sometimes tell a prefessional that you need to have surgery right away. Again its only a guess though and an opinion.

If there was a recommendation to get the biopsy than somthing in the cell that was viewed would tell them they need to look farther. Using beign as the actual situation shouldn't of been said to you - if they are recommending moving forward on a fine needle biospy.
