Did I hear Graves' Range, LOL!
Hello Newbie ;)
In the beginning I had so much energy I was like the energizer bunny - I kept going and going and going. Got a lot of things done. I also was hyper fidgety it drove my sister crazy. No matter how little I slept, (I had insomnia for 6 years), it felt like I had a refreshed 8 hours sleep. Now I am exhausted with the littlest exertion and need cat naps, sometimes several throughout the day.
I have had a few of the below.
Hyperthyroidism is often associated with anxiety, depression, mixed mood disorders, a hypomanic-like picture, hypomania or mania, insomnia, emotional liability, mood swings, emotional outburst, irritability/edginess, psychomotor agitation, fatigue, or cognitive deterioration with concentration problems. It also can manifest as psychosis or delirium.
Thyroid conditioned can exasperate existing mental problems or even mimic mental illness.
I have a sick dog and I am averaging 3 hour of sleep per night the last 10 night. Can't take sleep aids because I have to be awake for when he needs me. So I am on the verge of a Graves' Rage ;)
Welcome to our wacky world!
I know when I go hyper I do get very erratic and a bit compulsive. However, I have a question. A month or so ago we were discussing on this forum the number of diagnosed "bipolar" disorder patients with thyroid conditions.
In my family I have two diagnosed bipolars - my sister (mostly depressed) and my daughter (fast-cycling, mostly manic). My daughter, would get very compulsive and hyper until she had her thyroid removed then most of the bipolar symptoms disappeared.
May or may not apply in your case but I know there are a few bipolars here who feel there is a very strong thyroid/bipolar link. There is also this entertaining phenomenon known as Graves Rage (scan down for a post from GravesLady) that fits some of the same behavior.
So, what is your thyroid history? When you say hyper, what are your labs (and reference ranges) and what treatment are you undergoing? You said nodules and goiter - have they checked to see if they are "hot" nodules (hence your hyper status)?
Might want to check out the hyper information on endocrineweb.com: http://www.endocrineweb.com/hyper1.html
A big welcome to you. I'm thinking I'm going hyper right now too since I haven't slept more than about 5 hours in the past few days despite ambien. It's not fun.
