Get your aldosterone and renin levels checked.
I've been there, the swollen face, low ER (discovered after nine trips to ER with tachycardia and extreme high Blood Pressure)
A lot of the symptoms you describe sound like Hyperaldosteronism.
Barb makes a really good point, sitting for long times is the devil, I literally get my legs up on the couch or another chair etc and force myself to walk when I can't run...it does help. I also use compression socks sometimes I slept in them. Flying too, I would have swollen scary legs for a week or more after I flew, it was awful but the socks helped amazingly.
I also forgot to mention that sitting a lot will also tend to cause more swelling. If you do a lot of sitting, make sure you get up and walk around, at least once/hour throughout the day. Exercise is your friend.
I have swelling/edema most of the time and my sodium and chloride levels are at the top of the reference range, while my potassium levels are low, unless I take daily potassium supplement.
Swelling/edema is a symptom of hypothyroidism, but there are many other things that can cause it, as well, including congestive heart failure and others. In my case, those have all been ruled out, but ADH has never been tested that I know of, which is a real surprise, considering the amount of fluid I retain. However, considering that my sodium levels are so high, ADH is not likely to be an issue.
Ironically, the less water I drink, the more I swell, also..
I am very sensitive to the least amount of salt in my food and have to be very careful... When we eat out, I have to ask for my food to be prepared without salt/seasonings.
I'd suggest trying a sodium restricted diet and make sure you drink plenty of water... The recommendation is to drink half your weight in ounces of water/day... I, usually, can't drink that much, but if I sip continuously, throughout the day, I can come pretty close. I do find it easier to drink fruit or veggie infused water than plain water.
Hi there, I had serious water retention issues most of my adult life main issue was leg swelling and in my face, eyes were nearly closed shut. They never had an explanation for why I got this edema...I know they will check for kidney and heart issues (I had neither). I was on spironolactone for this and other issues - it did help some but not completely.
But when they diagnosed my hypo last year then I started NDT - it went away completely. It can't be a coincidence in my case, its been about 7 months now and I haven't had a single episode and I have had this my adult life - nearly 50 now. I'm amazed to be honest, surprised every morning when I'm not greeted by swollen eyes.
My experience - hope this helps. Kel
