Sounds like an adenoma, which the odds are it is benign, but I would request an FNA biopsy.  The fact that is it large, vascular and solid should be enough to get it biopsied...however that test is not always definative.  In my case the test was not diagnostic, the result was "benign follicular clusters".   I had to have the nodules (three) removed and tested, they turned out to have very small tumors in them - less than 2mm, I got lucky...papillary cancer stage 1.  I have to have the last nodule and the rest of the thyroid removed.  Good luck, and get more tests!

what is a adenoma im lost

by MANmom, May 09, 2009 03:20PM
Adenoma is a solid mass that is encapsulated, can be benign or cancerous, it is also referred to as a follicular neoplasm, goiter, etc.

by tee09, May 09, 2009 06:58PM
Oh ok if its cancerous wat are the next steps?

i got my measurements in i still don't know how to tell how big the solid mass is my measurements are 1.9x2.2x3.1 cm in dimension how do i know how big it is

by MANmom, May 09, 2009 11:11PM
If there are nodules they would state it in the ultrasound, like "nodule 1 measures x mm by x mm by x mm, nodule to measures...etc.  Are those measurements the mass or are they the total thyroid?  Sounds like it is the measurement of the mass.  If they are the mass, that is pretty big, I would have an FNA biopsy.  If it is cancerous, they take out your thyroid, it is relatively easy to remove and you are pretty much done, except for taking synthetic thyroid hormones and sometimes a Radioactive Iodine treatment to kill off any remaining thyroid tissue.  Thyroid cancer is 95% survivable and usually slow growing, but it does matter what kind of cancer it is...I was just diagnosed with papillary cancer, I am going to be having a second surgery to remove the lobe that is still there.  I will be seeing the Endocronologist next week to discuss the RAI treatment, I think I will need that due to the type of cancer I have and the fact that the surgeon left a thin film of thyroid tissue around the vocal nerves to make sure I could still sing.  Good luck, and keep on top of it.  Also look up information on the ThyCa website and others, you will find plenty of information.  I you do have surgery, I CAN'T STRESS IT ENOUGH...GET THE BEST SURGEON YOU CAN!  There are complications you don't want and the better the surgeon, the better the outcome.  You want on that does 50 or more thyroid surgeries a year...

thanks for the info! my report reads there is a large heterogeneously echogenic mass which appears to be solid and which demostrates fairly suvstantial vascularity on the color flow doppler ultrasound. this measures about 1.9x2.2x3.1cm. the mass appeard solid on the ultrasound  so im going to have a nucular scan tuesday to find out wat the soild mass is. im so lost and scared

by tee09, May 09, 2009 11:29PM
my doctor said he hope its a goiter im just scared

by MANmom, May 09, 2009 11:33PM
He is probably right, only 5-15% turn out to be cancerous, the odds are in your favor.  I would have an FNA biopsy, they can take out a small sample of cells and at least tell you if it is benign.  Don't be scared, you will likely be OK whether or not it is cancerous.  Very curable, almost 100% if caught early.  Relax, but keep at it until you get some answers.  Good luck!

thank u so much u have been a great help

by tee09, May 09, 2009 11:49PM
i mean does it cause you to eat alot because im always eating up everything and i feel weak alot to

by MANmom, May 10, 2009 11:06AM
If you are eating a lot and feel weak, your hormone levels are probably not quite right.  Have the Endo check all your hormones.

Thank you so much

If you get a positive result, i.e., cancer,  you will have your thyroid removed.  That pretty much takes care of the problem.  Depending on the type of cancer then a bit of radioactive iodine may be necessary.  Thyroid cancer is 95% curable, especially when caught early.  FNA biopsy does not always come back conclusive, I hope yours does.  Mine did not, I still have cancer.  My biopsy revealed benign follicular clusters, but that does not mean BENIGN nodules...follicular tumors look just like follicular cells, so in my case they could not be sure until they took out the nodules.  If it is not diagnostic, you can watch and wait, looking for changes in your ultrasound.

thanks for the info my doctor ***** big time he had me to have a nuc scan today i found a good endo hes about a hour and a half from me he told me he would see me but i have to have a refferal so i called my doctor to get one and he won't even give me one they said they will call me backk thats been monday and thats why im so confused why he just won't send me to an endo

by Smilerdeb, May 14, 2009 06:35AM
Your Doctor cannot refuse you a referral if you need to see an Endo.
Get another Doctor....sounds like the one you have isnt doing you much good , only making you worry needlessly.
Or call your Doctor and demand to know whats going on.
It is unfair and morally wrong that your Doc isnt giving you as much information as he should.

To: anyone
can anyone help me with these questions????

by MANmom, May 15, 2009 04:07PM
Google them, malignant means the cancer has spread, I believe...google cold thyroid nodule, you can read about any of your questions on several sites.  One great one is the ThyCa website:  http://www.thyca.org/index.htm  You can find all the information on all of your questions there.

To: MANmom or anyone that can help me
ok my report say These demostrate enlargement of the right lobe of the tyroid with a central area of mildly decreased activity. The appearance would be consistent with a relatively "cold" nodule or mass in the right lobe. im soo lost what does this mean ? from the sounds of it he don't even know if its a nodual or a mass  this report come from my uptake scan my uptake value was at 29%  and it said  activity otherwise appears to be within normal limits and relatively homogeneous.
