interferon induced Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidisim

by Jac567, Sep 17, 2008 05:08PM
I am currently in week 32 of 48 week interferon therapy for hepatitis B condition. My hepatologist tells me I am Hyperthyroid and a week ago I was told I was Hypo(by nurse). My question is this.  Is there anyone else who got Hyperthyroid whilst on interferon therapy and did it go on cessation of treatment. If it stays how will I know which thyroid inbalance I have Hyper or Hypo . The doctor has sent off for T3, T4 and antibody test. I don't want this condition but it here, so what can I do to help myself and get educated about this condition. is there a special diet and do I have to stop smoking? (This will be hard). Feel free to talk to me or could this be an indication of something more sinister!!!!.

Many thanks

Interferon can precipitate autoimmune diseases like the thyroid disease, so that's why he asked for thyroid antibodies.

I realize this comment was placed last year, but I am a new member and just happened by your post while looking for information regarding radioactive iodine uptake for hyperthyroid. My hyperthyroid was caused by interferon/riboflavin treatments and while I had high hopes that my levels might return to normal in time, and with medication, sadly, it only go worse. For me, interferon was a nightmare. I had to stop taking the riboflavin after the first 5 weeks and was limited to the shots only. I then had to cease the shots 5 weeks after that due to the side effects. Strangely enough, they said this short course of treatment cured me. It very much makes me wonder if I was diagnosed properly in the first place.

Anyway, sorry for going on and on. I wish you the best and hope your thyroid condition corrects itself. Whether you are hypo or hyper, your doctor will know for sure through maintenance testing for you on a regular basis.
