"On the other side of the controversy is the recognition that excessive iodine can trigger autoimmune thyroid disease and hypothyroidism."

Is your friend taking iodine under the supervision of a Doctor or Endocrinologist?  If not they need to talk to their Doctor.

On the other hand, symptoms could be from other health condition that mimic thyroid symptoms.

However, your friend should go to doctor to have her thyroid checked out with blood test.

If she is doing iodine on her own, could be dangerous to her and her health.

Thyroid is easy and simple compared to other illness, but nothing to fool around with and certainly not without being under a doctor's care!
