is a 50 mcg synthroid dose increase common?

My TSH went up to 40 and my doctor is raising me from 50 to 100 mcg of synthroid.

Has anyone ever heard of an increase of more than 25 mcg at one time? Is this normal?

You're right.  Typically, increases are no more than 25 mcg at a time.  If you're young and otherwise healthy, with no history of heart arrhythmia. you will probably handle it fine.  Did you start directly on 50 mcg, or did you work up to that?  Your TSH is quite high, so your doctor is probably anxious to get it down.

What's your FT3 and FT4 doing?  With reference ranges, please...

One of the best things you can do for yourself is get a copy of every lab result you get and start keeping your own history.

"So, should I not increase dose if T3 or T4 are normal and TSH is sky high? "

No, not necessarily.  It depends where in the range you are.

How do you feel?  Are you feeling very hypo?

Oh, I went from 50 to 75 for one week and now she is saying go right on up to 100 since my TSH is confirmed at 40

Hm, T3 and T4 are "within range" but I don't recall exactly what they were.

While increases are typically done in 25 mcg increments, or sometimes, even 12.5 mcg increments, it's, generally, okay to do a 50 mcg increase for someone who is young and has no heart or other issues and whose thyroid hormone levels are very low.

What are your FT3 and FT4 levels, with reference ranges?  Those are what should determine your increase.  TSH should not be the sole basis for increasing/decreasing medication.
