What type of surgery? I had a tt for thyca in May. I am experiencing hair loss as well- fortunately I have plenty to spare. My thyroid meds have been slowly increased over the past 4 months- I'm on my fifth dose to be exact. My doctor said that since I took many different strengths of synthroid, that explains the hair loss, but would eventually stop or not be so noticeable once I get regulated. (Hopefully) It's scary to see the mounds of hair everyday in the shower.
I also had my TT in May... had tons of hairloss, added Cytomel to my Levoxyl and the hairloss slowed down for about 3 weeks... and now it's in full swing again. This weekend yielded the most hairloss ever. Very disturbing. I also have lots of hair, but soon I won't have any if this doesn't stop.
If you go back through the pages, you will find lots of information on hair loss. I'll try to sum up:
1. Take BiotinBiotin forte Biotin forte with zinc and EveningEvening primrose Evening primrose oil Primrose Oil supplements
2. If you have low ferratin or iron, take supplements
3. If you have low B12, take supplements
4. Nioxin products, found in hair salons, seem to stimulate the scalp and hair regrowth, as well as make the existing hair feel/appear fuller
5. See a dermatologist to make sure you don't have allopecia
Many experience some hair loss for a while. I personally lost probably around 30-40% of my hair, but it seems to have stopped. Although I am very aware of it, no one else seems to be. If your hair loss continues, I would nag my doctor about checking labs again. Some people like to blame Synthroid, but it's also just as likely it's trauma from the original thyroid issue and subsequent surgery.
Mine is only 5 mg. I would google "biotin" at reputable sites like CDC.gov and nih.gov. Also you can ask someone knowledgeable at the health food store. I almost think Evening Primrose Oil is better because it converts the hormone at the hair follicle to the right one you need instead of the one that is making the follicle drop the hair.
Also, try googling "hair loss." There's a ton of info out there.
