low TSH just before IVF cycle

by sare68, Jul 02, 2009 03:57AM
Hello Dr Lupo

I am 40 years old and about to have a frozen embryo transfer next week (likely to be Wednesday). This is a natural cycle - no medication except some luteal phase support.

My TSH is very low and I have some concerns I hope you can allay.

I have had hypothyroidism for a year. My GP, who manages my dosage, increased my dose of thyroxine a couple of months ago (to 650 mcg a week) as my TSH was increasing and my T3 and T4 dropping. I got test results back yesterday that show my TSH is .03 (.3 - 5), my T4 18.8 (9 - 19) and T3 4.7 (2.6 - 6).

My concern is that the low TSH may affect my hormones in some subtle way and compromise the success of my frozen embryo transfer.

However, my hormones appear to be fine.... my clinic thinks I am about to ovulate (today my estrogen 1446, p4 3.6 and LH 9. That's up from yesterday: e2 1037, p4 3.4 and LH 7. I am on day 10 of my cycle and usually ovulate on day 11). My luteal phase last cycle (a non-IVF cycle) had high and sustained temperatures and lasted 13 days.

My usual fertilty specialist is away and her replacement did not seem certain of whether it might pose a problem. Under the guidance of my GP, I am adjusting my dose to get my TSH up a little - but not too dramatically, so I imagine it may take a couple of weeks to get a change of any significance.

Thank you in advance for any advice you might be able to offer.

Hi You have posted on the forum not the expert page. This is the link where you would need to ask the doctor.

Be aware his page fills pretty quickly and it may take a couple of days to get accepted to post the question.

Good luck with the IVF

Thank you! I realised just after I posted it that it was in the wrong spot. I will post first thing tomorrow in the drs forum and see how I go. Thanks again.
