I had an ultrasound done and the radiologist report read benign nodules. Is that his job to know whether nodules are benign or malignant just from looking at an ultrasound?  Also, I have had SEVERE neck pain for 2 weeks can not turn my neck hurts to swallow but not my throat my neck hurts my right arm hurts pain meds and muscle relaxers are NOT working. Can this be related???

Other than your FT4 being very low in the range, indicating that you are still hypo, I don't see anything remarkable.

If the nodules had irregular margins or other unusual characteristics or if the adjacent thyroid tissue was uncharacteristic, I'd be concerned, but they aren't.

If those blood tests were done in July, they are outdated now and need to be redone. Since your FT4 was very low in the range, then, it could be even lower now.   You also need to get the Free T3 test done, as well as the antibody tests mentioned above.

For your information, Dr Lupo does not monitor this forum, so it's unlikely that he will comment.  To get expert comments, you need to post on the expert forum.

OK I have my results. in July my tsh # was 0.45 ( 0.36-3.74) range
Thyroxine,free level was 0.91 ( 0.60-1-50) range

Ultra done last week showed right thyroid gland lobe 5.4x1.8x1.8 cm in diameter.. left lobe is 5.8x1.6x1.2 cm in diameter  .. Mixed echogenicity appearance were identified bilaterally the one on the right measuring        .7 x.7 x .5 cm in diameter and the left measuring .5 x.5 x.3
cm in diameter. Margins are normal. The adjacent tissue to the thyroid gland is unremarkable.

What are your thoughts?

I still have neck pain. and it still hurts to swallow only on right side.

It's impossible to say whether or not you have a thyroid issue, without the proper lab tests.  Nodules can be present when the thyroid is working perfectly.   Nodules can cause pain in the neck, if they are large enough.

Do you have other symptoms of a thyroid condition?

If your doctor refuses the proper testing, you should get a different doctor.

Sorry, i left out and important word in my last comment.

"One does NOT have to have a thyroid disease to have nodules there. Odd, but true."

However, if you seem to have  thyroid symptoms, like Barb mentioned, get those tests even if it means finding a different Dr.

Does having nodules mean I have Tyroid problems? What about the neck pain? Can these nodules be the cause? She said the nodules where large but dense.

If your doctor is refusing to do proper thyroid testing, you should find a different doctor.  Things can change quickly and just because your levels were ok in June, doesn't mean they are ok now.

You need the Free T, Free T4, TSH and antibody tests.  It's not unusual for symptoms to show up before lab reports indicate an issue.

Some people even with a healthy thyroid have thyroid nodules. One does have to have a thyroid disease to have nodules there. Odd, but true.

I have not been diagnosed with any thyroid Hypo or hyper.. Thats why I was surprised when the catscan ( that was taken for the neck pain came back with nodules and then the ultra sound confirmed. My Dr. is telling me that the neck and should pain has nothing to do with the thyroids but yet is not testing my levels to see where they are at since in June they where border line...So confused!!!!

While biopsy is the only way to tell for sure if a nodule is malignant, approximately, 95% of thyroid nodules are benign, and radiologists can  tell by specific characteristics whether or not a nodule is suspicious and warrants further investigation.

Cant tell from looking. Nodul biopsies are common for noduals lager than 1 cm (10mm) in any direction.

Many with autoimmune thyroid Hashi and Graves people have neck and shoulder muscle pain - very common. The antibodies attacking the thyroid create an inflammatory repose - maybe that spreads, no one knows for sure.

Do you have other hypo symptoms- nothing mentioned. Are you currently on thyroid med? This also happens when your thyroid med is not at the right level for you personally. This is why its important to understand the T3 and T4 and at what level you feel best at - this is your target regardless of what Drs tell you. My hole body hurts when hypo.
