parathyroid level abnormal after surgery to remove

I had a parathyroid gland removed in February after blood tests showed an elevated pth and calcium level. My calcium and pth returned to normal immediately.

Last week, new blood tests showed a normal calcium level and an Intact PTH of 152.9 (14-72).

The lab report says this indicates secondary hyperparathyroidism. My research shows this typicslly occurs when calcium levels are low. My level is normal.

Other abnormal lab values:

Creatinine 1.2 (.6-1.0)
CGFR.       47

I am a lung cancer patient, completing chemo and radiation in April 2010. March Prt scan showed no tumor activity nor metastasis.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Please keep in mind that the only relationship between the thyroid and the parathyroids is their location in the body; you have 4 parahthyroids, and only one thyroid.  I wonder if he saw all 3 of the other parathyroids?

You could have developed another parathyroid issue since the surgery.  Not everyone with hyperparathyroidism has abnormal calcium levels.

Yes, by all means, you should pursue the issue; it may turn out to be nothing, but I'd sure want to make sure.

The surgeon was able to get a clear view of the other thyroid glands and all appeared normal. My pth and calcium returned to normal levels within 10 minutes of the removal of the abnormal gland and remained normal until last week.

I stay well hydrated so that shouldn't be an issue.

My PCP signed off on thr blood test results and made no comment about the abnormalities.

I am wondering if I need to pursue this with the surgeon who removed my parathyroid.

Thanks!

First thing that comes to mind is another parathyroid tumor.  Sometimes, people have to have more than one parathyroid gland removed.

Creatinine and gfr both measure kidney function; not sure how that correlates with lung cancer or parathyroid.   Do you make sure to drink enough water in order to prevent dehydration?

Have you been in touch with your doctor?
