Hello, I went to my endo and they did blood work it showed up that my TSHPituitary and tsh Tsh was.005 he said it was low. Everything else T3,T4T4 test was normalNormal saline flush. I had a sonogram and a nodule showed up, on the findings it says that is "EnlargedEnlarged adenoids Enlarged prostate Thyroid with an ill-defined solitary nodule on the right lobe. the Dr. is sending me for a thyroid uptake and scan. the nodule is 0.71X0.66X0.53cm. DO I have to worry because is a solitary nodule that it maybe cancerous? PLease help me
Jennifer
I had very similar thing as well. The uptake and scan will determine if the nodule is cold or hot. Depending on those results, you will go for a biopsy. That's how it was for me.
My TSHPituitary and tsh Tsh was .27 then 0.6 ( had 1st blood work done after a meal and 2nd blood work done after fasting), and my nodule was 2.2 cm( which is about 1 inch). I never felt it. Hope this helped.
forgot the most important question you had. A small percentage of nodules are cancerous. Mine was not. Your Endo should have some info on thyroid nodules for you to read.
Ok back from lunch. I found some reading material I got from the Endo. This is what it says----
Hot nodule is hyperfunctioning or taking up more radioactivity than normal thyroid tissue does, taking up the same amount as normal tissue is warm nodule and taking up less is cold nodule. it also says, because cancer is rarely found in holt nodules, a scan showing a hot nodule eliminates the need for fine needle biopsy. If the hot nodule cause hyperthyroidism, it can be treated with radioiodine or surgery.
It also this that thyroid scan or radioiodine treatment should never be given to a pregnant woman.
also, 90-95 % of nodules are benign. thyroid scans show that most thyroid nodules, both benign and malignant, are cold or non functioning. Therefore, although almost all thyroid cancers are non functional on scan, the majority of non functional nodules are benign.
Also, having a scan is of little value unless TSH levels are toward the lower end of the normal range or below range.
