I think I will just not do the biopsy and just request it be removed and be done. Just for the fact that the nodule is not hot and the FNB does have such a high false negative rate. I have 3 kids to worry about and waiting for it to turn out to be cancer and spread is not an option I am willing to take. Even though there is a very small chance that it is cancer, my entire life has been made up of instances that were small percentages and I had it. There was no chance- less than 5% that I would survive when I was born, and that if I did I would be "a vegetable". Well, I did survive (obviously) and I happen to be very smart and capable of breathing and walking on my own. Then when I was 5 months pregnant I had to have my gallbladder removed and there was a very small chance that the baby would survive and she did. Then I was diagnosed last year with fatty liver disease, and about 10-15% of fatty liver disease patients have the kind that develops into cirrhosis, and I'm in that 10-15%. So, is it probable that it's cancer--no. Is it possible that it is cancer--yes. So I don't want to take any chances. Especially if it has my windpipe pushed to the left.
Do they use RAI to shrink thyroid nodules or something else? Do we have to have RAI after our thyroids are removed? I just think surgery would be a lot easier physically, mentally and emotionally. Did your doctor say anything about your recovery after your thyroidectomy: How long pain will last. restrictions, stuff like that?
Thanks guys!!
Hi, I have my blood test normal too. I had my left side removed in 1982 just because it was swelling with liquid inside. I have never had to take any medication. Ten years ago after I had my son, I found a lump on the right side of my neck. I didn't see any doctor until 2001, I came to see an endo, I had blood test normal, my endo did the FNA (one in 2001 and one in 2006) to draw some liquid out and biopsy came back just a benign thyroid. I had blood test 3, 4 times a year, always came back normal. I have all kind of hypo symtoms, very tired, can not concentrate, can not focus, depression, can not tolerate heat and cold...My endo suggested that I should have surgery to remove the goiter. In the last 2 years it get bigger and bigger. Now I feel something stuck in my throat and more tired every day. I decided to have it remove. My surgery will be on 5/1/07. I wonder why my blood test always normal but I have all kind of problems.
Now I'm not worry about the surgery but I'm scare about taking the medicine after. I read almost all the posts here and the problems deal with Synthoid are too much for me. Is there any way we can avoid that? Take care, hope you feel better soon.
Your story is interesting. I find I am having symptoms as well, but the doctor's kind of blow it off since the bloodwork shows normal. I know a woman that had thyroid cancer and had her entire thyroid removed and is doing find on medication- still thin, never gained weight. From what I understand, if your medicine is give to you properly, you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck on your surgery.
Definitely get your nodules checked out. I have a normal functioning thyroid, but on my uptake they found that my dominant nodule was cold. I am going for a FNA within the next month to rule out cancer. My uptake also suggested hyperthyroidism, but my bloodwork does not. follow up on that nodule because it could turn out to be something even with "normal" bloodwork.
