Hi there. My doctors kept pushing me to find out if I had any radiation therapies done when I was younger, too. I had Hurthle's Cells in my thyroid (4.5cm nodule) and allegedly it seems radiation is one of the major causes of it.
I know when I was a child I had a ton of illness. Pneumonia, lasted 3 months. I had x rays constantly. I recall going to the dentist a million times for issues, and back then they did not use the lead apron to protect the patient and their thyroids.
I think that 25 years ago, (seems like a long time to some people!) the dose of radiation for most issues was actually not that much greater than today.
It is highly dependent on that biopsy you are having as to what is going on inside that nodule. If it turns out to be a Hurthle's cells, then you can be almost certain (almost, I said, as the jury is still out on this one) that the radiation was the cause. If it turns out to be a benign nodule (non cancerous) then it was just bad luck on your behalf that your thyroid played with you.
I know it is difficult to not jump the gun at this stage, and telling you to relax is not going to make you feel better! Honestly, I doubt the radiation caused the nodule. Many many people have nodules with no ill effects.
I am glad you survived your breast cancer. That must have been very terrifying for you. No wonder you are worried again!
Cheers!
I have had radiation years ago for 2 breast lumps and it didnt cause nodules on my thyroid.
In actual fact...if anything, radiation would cause you to go Hypo.
I also had radiation treatment for a cancer growth on one of my glands at the side of my neck in 1991 and still no nodules.
Maybe you should ask others about this as this is the first time I have heard of radiation causing nodules.
Usually too little or too much thyroid hormones cause nodules (autoimmune diseases such as Graves and Hashi's.
