remove my entire thyroid?

by bakerbaker, May 07, 2008 12:23PM
Hi I have a large goiter on my left lobe and several nodules on my right. My dr. found abnornal cells in the goiter. He wants to remove my entire thyroid. My question is do I have to? If it turns out that the goiter in cancer free then can I keep my functioning nodule ridden right side or is it fruitless. I also want to get pregnant, how does a lack of a thyroid and or replacement drugs relate to pregnancy?

I know a couple of people who opted to only have half of the thyroid removed only to have the other have removed later.  I have an enlarged thyroid with nodules on both sides.  One side is much larger then the other.  Once the nodules or lobe become to big, I will opt to have the whole thing removed at one time.  Being cut open twice is not something I want to do.  I can't help you with the pregnacy question sorry.
