should i start synthroid?

eos
i am a healthy 28 yo female...recently i had a TSH level done, the result being 5.546, with this lab using a normal range of 0.3 to 5...my doctor gave me a prescription for Synthroid 0.05 mg once a day, but i am hesitant to start any medication unless i truly need it...since i have no symptoms of hypothyroidism, and my TSH level is not extremely elevated, do i really need to start Synthyriod yet?....can i request my TSH level be retested in a few months to see if it continues to increase?....also, my doctor only wanted me to take Synthroid, not the generic, stating the generic does not work well in this instance...opinions?....thank you!

Fortunately, you don't have symptoms. Which is curious as to why the doctor decided to look into this.
I would speak with your doctor and see if he thinks it would be unreasonable to wait a few months and retest.
Untreated hyper/hypothyroidism has it's consequences. Do keep a close eye on this.

I can't tell you whether or not to take the meds.  You need to discuss it with your doctor for doctor might have reason based on your health.  If not, the case below is some ammunition.   Either paste the below or google for more direct info. and copy to take to doctors.

AACE - American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists  2006 amended guidelines,
US Government 2004 Guidelines
UK 2006 Guidelines
American Thyroid Association
The Endocrine Society -  Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. September 23, 2004 .

quote - TSH of 4.5 to 10:  No routine levothyroxine treatment for patients with TSH levels between 4.5 and 10 mIU/L, but thyroid function tests should be repeated at 6- to 12-month intervals to monitor for improvement or worsening in TSH level. Early levothyroxine therapy does not alter the natural history of the disease,.........

TSH Higher Than 10 mIU/L Hypothyroidism Levothyroxine therapy is reasonable.

Data do not confirm clear-cut benefits for early therapy....... - unquote

Good luck!
