stomach pain related to thyroid issues

Hi
I am a 33 year old woman who by my body temperature of 95.7 at it's highest and with all the hypothyroid symptoms plus some have self diagnosed myself with hypothyroid until I see my general doctor and expect the same diagnosis from him.
Anyway being hypothyroid and having sever stomach pains I am wondering if there is a possibility that my stomach pains are because of my thyroid. It feels like my stomach is compromised or caught or strained. It only hurts someday's not all the time.
I am suppose to go in and have a scope put in my stomach this Friday and I am starting to think it is related to the thyroid and that I am just going to be spending unnecessary money on this procedure.
I am on phenegran to stop the vomiting & on Acephex <---spelling?? to stop the stomach acids.
any thoughts would be nice.
thanks

You have many symptoms that are frequently related to hypothyroidism.  Please post your thyroid related test results and reference ranges shown on the lab report.

Whenever my thyroid hormones are too low, I get stomach pain, bloating and distention, burning in the chest, and belching. In fact, for me it was one of the first symptoms that something was wrong with my thyroid and I did all the things it sounds like many of you are doing....endoscopy, prescription of Prilosec that did no good, probiotics.... And my chiropractor found I had a hiatal hernia, but no matter how many times she gave me adjustments (and it's a very weird thing to feel your stomach slipping back into position, I'll tell you) , my stomach would almost immediately herniate again. The endoscopy revealed a small amount of esophageal erosion from acid reflux but not, thank goodness, full blown GERD. I was SO uncomfortable. It left me with no appetite, yet I still gained weight...hello thyroid.

Once I was prescribed T3 in addition to the T4 I was already taking to suppress nodules....WALLA ! The stomach problems all went away in a very short time. So now if my stomach starts bothering me, it's a major  clue to go and get my FT4 and FT3 labs redone and adjust my medications. I did not have gluten sensitivity, but that's not saying some of you might react differently. And yes, celiac disease is associated with hypothyroidism....but that is usually accompanied by more radical digestive and elimination symptoms.

I've read various papers on the correlation between hypothyroidism and GERD/stomach problems. This is one of the best. The ND who wrote it is a very well respected researcher in thyroid disorders, in fact he has written letters and given evidence to the Scottish Parliament in support of the current controversy and demand there (and from there to the world Health Organization) on behalf of better diagnostic testing and care for thyroid patients.

Anyway, FYI. Hope this helps. It's well known that one result of low T3 is lax muscles, so it makes perfect sense to me that the stomach and it's connectors would become lax and allow gastric reflux. See what you think.

Wondering how it all worked out for you? Sounds very similar to what's happening to me. I am going in to see a docter next week and hoping to get thyroid test done. I have been having major stomach problems for years now. My stomach produces too much acid and keeps on pumping it which makes the ph too high for it to empty,  it so it won't empty, then it becomes herniated and inflamed. After many trips to the ER because I couldn't stop vomiting (always had to have an IV of Phenergen, acid reducers and stay on liquids for a few days), I have now been on Famotidine for several years now, and have to take it every 12 hours to keep from throwing up. Lately it's not working as well and lots of nausea and stomach problems along with bloating and gas as well as not wanting to empty again. I've been having lots of cold to the bone and shaking for the last month now, along with fatigue and weight gain. My body temperature continues to stay low all the time now so I'm thinking it's my thyroid. Really hoping things turned out well for you, and helping the thyroid helped your stomach!

Please tell me how things worked out for you!

I was 2 days away from having gull bladder surgery and in my gut I just knew it wasn't that.

I rerearched like a dog, cancelled the surgery and found that hypos have a PH inbalance W/ a LOW stomach acid and corrected those things.

The pains are gone - no acid anymore and can eat anything I chose to w/out pains or gas not that I am optimal.

Research the T3 hormone levels and PH levels.  PPI's are hypoT patient'w worst nightmare so if your are taking them - try to stop them and look at trying ACV when you get an attack.

i am a 50 year old male , last year i was suffering from severe stomach pain and excessive gas formation. i met host of doctors including specialist gastrologist who got my endoscopy done but reported everything is fine he then prescribed some medicine but the pain was still there, i also asked the doctor that can this pain be related to hypothyroidism as my other four brother and sisters are suffering from it , the doc said no this had got nothing to do with this. i also met a ayurvedic doctor his medicine too did not bring any relief. meanwhile i got myself tested for TSH, T3 and T4 and took this results to another doctor who immediately said that you have got hypothyroidism and prescribed a medicine , though he too said that this has got nothing to do with your stomach pain, however the reality is that after i started taking thyroxine my stomach pain went away.

this year after taking 25 mcg of thyroxine for the last ten months i again started having this stomach pain , i again did the rounds of all the docs and they all told has got nothing to do with hypothyroidism after taking quite a few tinidazole and antacid with no relief i decided to increase my does of throxine from 25 mcg to 75 mcg and well my pain has again gone.

i am writing this for general information of everyone , also i am quite surprised that why do doctors do not agree that stomach pain and hypothyroidism are related.

Do any of you suffer from bad bowel pain? What do you do to relieve it? Also how do you get rid of the migrains? I am new at this hypothyroid and lost a 20 pounds on the HCG diet a couple of months ago and now the weight is coming all back on....very frustrated. I ex like crazy!!

Is it true that people with hypothyroidism can actually over ex to the point that they gain weight? My college gym trainer told me this.

Thanks

Well, I went in yesterday and had the endoscopy as it turns out I have gastroparasis (lazy stomach that is not digesting my food well) He also found my stomach is herniated & very inflamed.
No wonder I have been vomiting. He put me on a live active culture diet meaning I am drinking danactive and keifer for breakfast every morning and again in the evening, plus keeping me on the Aciphex and Phenegren until my stomach is a little happier and not so inflamed.
I have to say I am loving my new prescription already! I was so afraid they were going to tell me the hernia required surgery but nope... .Have a smoothie for breakfast! I did go in yesterday morning as well and have my blood drawn for my thyroid and I am waiting for those results.
Wishing you all the best,
Niven

A thought on your stomach pain...I had similar tests for stomach pain and suffered acid for a long time...all tests came back negative...

Turned out a soy allergy was causing my symptoms...If your tests are negative like mine, give it a thought...

Good luck

Thank you both for your insight. I saw my general practitioner
yesterday and he was great, he had no problem ordering the bloodwork I  requested, so I went to the lab this morning and had that done and now I am off to get the scope.
I have done some research on hashi's and 5thave I wish you all the best, from what I read it is just brutal... I am praying for stomach ulcers at this point because I want nothing to do with either Hashi's or celiacs.
Wishing you all the best

Hi, I had thyroid problems for years and never any stomach pain till recently. First they diagnosed Hoshimoto's thyroid  a few weeks later I had stomach pain. It would always be there but lessen and then get stronger. It wore me out it was exhausting. Anyway to make a long story short the first doc didnt know what it was gave me acid pills they helped but I never had any heartburn. Later found out that it was Celiac disease and from ingesting gluten or wheat. As long as I stay away from it their is no pain.  Hashi's is auto immune and apparently runs closely with Celiac. Hope this helps.

I am not a Dr., but do feel the scope is necessary at this point to r/o what is or isn't going on ... I'm not familiar with thyroid causing these problems but anything is possible if there is a disruption in ANY OF YOUR SYSTEM which can cause the acid reflux you describe.  When my dd's gallbladder went bad it caused severe reflux similar pain in her stomach, etc. and took yrs to properly diagnose.  Once it was removed, so did all her other problems go away.

So,yes, a hypo problem could *posibly* trigger other issues to happen just by the sense it isn't right but I am only a patient like yourse.f

Keep us posted on scope and insist on a full thyroid panel.
