I have noticed the same things. I was having a small glass of wine every night with dinner and I was retaining vast amounts of fluid. I quit drinking the wine and started drinking tons of water and it seems to be going away. I'm a runner as well but I don't notice that I retain after a run, just after the wine. Too bad to because I really like that wine. NEED the wine.
I have a lot of water retention as well - my body weight can vary by as much 4 pounds between morning and evening. I'm on 75 mcg synthroid - just yesterday dx w/ Hashi's. It's hard to make a fist when I first get up in the morning and my feet sometimes don't work well. I've had water retention for years, but some days it's worse since I started taking the synthoid, it doesn't seem to go away like it used to. My PCP says fluid retention is no big deal, has nothing to do with thryoid, etc - but then he tells me that all of my symptoms are ONLY stress or age related and have nothing to do with thyroid!! In fact, his favorite thing is: "Well unfortunately, that's what happens when we get older". Like just because you get to a certain age, you have to feel like **** all the time - I'd like to see the stone that's written on.
A while back (couple yrs ago) I had switched from regular table salt to Morton's Lite Salt, which has only 1/2 the sodium and tastes almost the same - that didn't help with water retention, but my BP did go down some. More recently (last couple months), I switched from the Lite Salt to sea salt. I still haven't noticed much difference, but then maybe it hasn't been long enough for my body to adjust. Like so many people, patience is not one of my virtues, especially when I'm waiting for something to make me feel better.
I have sufferred with fluid retention from day one when I was dx with Graves & Hyperthyroidism and on Carbimazole.
I also suffer with it now (6 months Post RAI ) and on Thyroxin but not as bad.
I put it down to just being my age and it comes and goes in stages.
I dont get it everyday.
There are many theories on this I could write a novel on what I have read - since this effects me too.
In brief - Here are a few key points I believe: -
- You could still be a bit hypo for your body and need an increase to convert more hormone.
- You could have just had an increase or decrease of meds and you need time to adjust.
- You could be not adjusting to your meds and may need to switch
- You could be low Free T3 and either adding a T3 med to your Synthroid or going to a T3/T4 combo may be better.
- You could be Vit or Mineral depleted and need to consider a magnesuim or potassium supplement to assist you in ridding the water. Meaning your electrolytes are off. A solid work up with testing can help determine if you need to increase your Vits or Mineral intakes. Iodized sodium is storing and you may need to try and eliminate as much "table salt" as possible and move to a sea salt instead. Wine or Liquor will retain water in anyone - that is just "normal" If you alternate the wine with a glass of water in between that will help alot. In the morning a glass of sea salt ( 1T) and 8oz water will usually deplete the retention a bit.
Are you sweating when you run? If not - you need to express that with your doctor - that could give him more of an idea that you are still hypo and need adjustments.
i was on synthroid a while ago and i have had water retension for about 6 months now my legs and stomach are bigger then normal and i dont know what to do. when i move fast you can hear the water in ther...the doctors wont help...and tips to get rid of all this water?
I had a TON of water retension on Synthroid. So much so, I sloshed when I woke up in the morning. (K, so I couldn't make a fist first thing in the morning) It was horrible! I also had joint pain/arthritis (my hip joint got to where it was SEVERLY uncomfortable to walk) and so I switched meds. Ultimately I went back to what worked for me. A combo of Levothyroxine and Cytomel. I have really improved. I think not only switching meds, but adding the Cytomel back into the mix is what works well for me.
