Welcome to the forum, Vickie.
Thyroid storm is something that is mentioned a lot but not discussed often by people who have had one. It is not a three day event.
It is a condition that lasts about fifteen minutes and then you are either over the crisis (via intervention), or dead. Unless you are in an ER setting getting the proper drugs through an IV, all your systems shut down and you die in less than an hour of onset.
Your hormone levels (not your TSH) are so high that they induce seizures and heart failure due to uncontrolled tachacardia, among other organ failures.
I was hypo (Hashimoto's), had Total Thyroidectomy for papillary in July, I-131 in August (hospitalized 2 days later with a TSH of 111.09), stormed in Sept/Oct. If I moved to walk to the bathroom my heart rate would rise to 125 while my average blood pressure was 82/52. Bladder and waste elimination shutting down, eyelids not responsive while awake, rapid weight loss (muscle mass) digestive system shutdown. (If I ate anything my heart rate would shoot sky high). I was on 100 mcg of Synthroid and crying out to my doctor to do something. I finally did my own research and discovered that sometimes with extreme illness and/or surgery the bodies ability to convert T4 to T3 in impaired. I used my phone a friend and started taking Armour Thyroid 30mg, 2x day (equals 100 mcg Synthroid). Within 3 days my HR and BP were regulating, the day after that my bladder and waste system worked properly and 4 days later I was able to attend church and visit with my grand daughter. I will be increasing Armour a little at a time over the next 6 months to get to the correct levels of T4/T3. God Bless, Vickie
The website I think Utah was getting to maybe was www endocrineweb (dot) com
Not sure why it was blanked out.
but is has very useful information available and should be able to be posted.
She has stated that thyroid storming - which happened to me in 2003 is a case of a severe hyPER thyroid condition. That is true.
It really is not a thought when a person is hypothyroid because it requires a large amount of hormones that are dumping into the system to produce this activity.
I am not sure but IF you are over medication to such a degree that induces hyperthyroidism - then may be you could storm. I am not sure on that since dosages are usually regulated and will not be overmedicated to you in such a degree of danger.
Thyroid storm is an *extreme* case of hyperthyroidism. http://www.endocrineweb.com/thyroid.html
