thyroid cancer to rai to new synthroid dosage and hunger pains

by tigerkid, Apr 04, 2008 07:36AM
Hello there. I have a question pertaining to stomach aches and hunger as they relate to adjusting dosages of Synthroid.

Here's a brief history:
I had a total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer in September. I had one big 3cm nodule and then numerous smaller, also cancerous, nodules. Some difficulties, but to be expected.

Went on Cytomel in the interim.

Six weeks after surgery I had RAI at 100 millicuries (and I withdrew from Cytomel and went on low-iodine diet before that).

Post-RAI my dosage of Synthroid has been gradually increased as my TSH was much too high (I was off the charts before RAI, but that's where I should have been, then six weeks after the RAI I was at 30 still, and as two weeks ago I was at 9). So, my endocrinologist, who's awesome, and I, are still tinkering to lower the TSH.

Currently, I'm on 150mcg of Synthroid. By and large I feel great. But there are a couple nagging problems which have arisen, and I'm wondering if they will eventually dissipate or if anyone has suggestions to combat that (because I pretty much have to keep on with 150mcg of Synthroid for the time being to suppress my TSH, it's not negotiable in my case)...and these problems basically are that I'm ravenously hungry all the time, though since I'm in college I can't exactly eat that often...so I get these stabbing pains all across my stomach. They're not isolated to any particular place--it's widespread and very uncomfortable. When I do eat enough, I then have diarrhea. I understand excessive hunger and diarrhea can be symptomatic of hyperthyroidism, but I'm not sure whether they'll subside as I adjust. And I haven't gained any weight at all--I'm 5'10'' and 130lbs (and I'm a 19 year-old female, for the record). I eat a very healthy diet and I'm in great shape too, and I feel wonderful most of the time despite all that's happened--it's just these symptoms are becoming expensive and annoying.

Thanks!
