thyroid cysts

by thev2, Aug 23, 2007 11:48PM
I was having problems swallowing so I went to my DR. a ultrasound was done and 4 cysts was found in the right thyroid and 2 in the left.  The biggest in the right ---11mm the rest ranging from 7mm to 3mm.  I tried to get an app with an Endocrinologist---the soonest he could se me was Jan 29, 2008!!!!!!   So my Dr decided to send me to a Surgeon....Who do I really need to go to???an Endocrinologist or a surgeon, or an ENT Dr. since I'm having problems swallowing.  I was on Synthroid .5mcg daily and I found that when I took it with-in a hour my throat was much more swollen and more difficult to swallow---so I stopped.  Monday will be 2 weeks.  All my labs are with-in normal limits.  Please help !!!!    I'm so uncomfortable  when I swallow.                   Linda T

Hi!  If you have copies of your thyroid labs, would you please post them here.  Sometimes "normal" seems to be open to interpretation.  Have you been tested for thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb)?  If not, then it might be a good idea.

An endocrinologist probably can't/won't do much unless your #s are out of range.  Maybe see if there's an ENT in your area that can see you.  Most are familiar with thyroid issues, particularly nodules and cysts.  Did the ultrasound show any compression?  If so, then that might be why your're having trouble swallowing and why your dr's referring you to a surgeon.  If not, then it could very well be acid reflux, which is common among folks with thyroid issues, and an ENT could figure this out with a simple and painless procedure.

Please keep us posted. :)
