You said that you have been hypothyroid for a while now. The most common cause for diagnosed hypothyroidism is Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.  Were you tested for Hashi's?  The tests are TPO ab and TG ab.

If you look at this link, it lists 26 typical hypo symptoms.  Which , if any, do you have?

http://endocrine-system.emedtv.com/hypothyroidism/hypothyroidism-symptoms-and-signs.html

From your TSH levls, I expect that you are under-medicated and are still hypothyroid.  The best way to know is from symptoms, and also levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4 (not the same as Total T3 and T4).  If you haven't been tested for Free T3 and Free T4, then you should do so.  Since hypo patients are frequently deficient in other areas as well, I suggest that you should also test for Vitamin A, D, B12 and ferritin.  Since you mentioned a sore throat as well, it would also be a good idea to have an ultrasound test of your thyroid gland to see if you have nodules.

If you will get those tests done, when results are available, if you will post results and their reference ranges shown on the lab report members will be glad to help interpret and advise further.

I am not quite clear about whether you have been tasking the med or not.  The main question should be whether you have symptoms or not.  If not, then there really isn't a problem is there, regardless of your test results.  If you have been taking the med and you have no symptoms, then why would you want to change?

Also, you should make sure to get tested for Free T3 and Free T4 each time you go in for tests.  TSH is a pituitary hormone that is supposed to reflect levels of the actual thyroid hormones, but in reality it does not correlate well with either Free t3 or Free T4, much less with symptoms.  Also, don't forget the Vitamin  A, D, B12 and ferritin.

If the basic cause of being hypo is Hashimoto's, the most common cause of diagnosed hypothyroidism, or say if you have a pituitary problem causing low TSH, then you will need to take thyroid meds for life.  If there is no underlying cause, the act of taking thyroid meds will not cause a person to need the meds forever.
