thyroid fna suspicious cells

my husband had a large growth on hih thyroid. a doctor at mass general did a fine needle aspiration with ultra sound and found the growth was cystic large on the left with 4 small nodules starting on the right. the aspiration showed atypical cell and suspicious cells. his thyroid was removed on april 28. we are waiting for biopsy results. any info. will help us get thru the weekend with less stress til we get results next week thanks

thanks for the info. i will keep you posted. he never had any pain or discomfort from it and it looked the size of a small egg along the side of his clavical. anyhow,thanks again!

Right now there is nothing to stress about.  You two have made a huge leap in taking charge of his health - he had the surgery to remove the thyroid.

I'm posting a good link on the four types of thyroid cancer (just in case).  The most common is papillary carcinoma.  http://www.endocrineweb.com/thyroidca.html

For papillary and follicular there is a very, very effective treatment; it's called radioactive iodine (we call it RAI here but the doctors call it I-131).  It involves "starving" the body for a few months for iodine (since only thyroid tissue and thyroid cancer absorb iodine) then giving an oral dose of RAI.  The remaining thyroid tissue/cancer absorbs the iodine and gets nuked.  It's kind of like cheese in the mousetrap for hungry thyroid tissue.

That's a bridge to cross if, (and hopefully NOT), you need to.
