thyroid levels

by aimles, Sep 30, 2009 07:58PM
I have had a thyroidectomy a little over 2 months ago.  I was first given 150cmg of Synthroid and then after 30 days tested for levels.  The TSH came back at 1.66, but I wasn't feeling well, so doctor raised it to 200.  Now, after 60 days, had my blood taken again and TSH 0.24 and freeT4 1.4.  I am still not feeling better.  Doctor says everything looks good, and wants to keep me on the same dose.  Is this the new "normal" I am supposed to be feeling?  I just want to know the meaning of the TSH combined with the T4 and how that effects me.  I don't feel good, and is there anything that would make me feel better?

TSH is a pituitary hormone and not always indicative of thyroid function  - ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU DON'T HAVE ONE!

Your FT4 could probably go a few points higher, in the high/normal range. Some people are different and they don't feel well until TSH is lower. Sounds like the doctor is afraid to make you go hyper.

Also, I see you're missing a VERY important lab range: FT3.

Ask your doctor to test your FT3 level and then if it is low, DEMAND he try you on some Cytomel.

If not, try switching to a natural thryoid pill like Armour Thryoid or Nature Thyroid.

Or better yet, find a new doctor who knows how to properly medicate you.

Are you avoiding soy? Sometimes, it interferes with thryoid med consumption. Are you taking your Synthroid on a full glass of water and waiting an hour to eat? No Soy, or at least not within four hours of taking Synthroid - Coffee Creamers!

No uncooked cabbage, broccoli within four hours.

Also, have you checked your adrenals? Many people with thyroid problems have low adrenal function. It's worth a look.
