thyroid nodule surgery

Hi, my doctor would like me to undergone surgery coz of my large left thyroid nodule.  She referred me to a surgeon.  My concern is what are the pro's and con's if I actually have the surgery.  Is my voice be affected or possibly change?  I'm not having any problem and its not even visible.  And its not cancerous.  As much as possible I wanna avoid surgery.  Take medications probably to make it smaller or rather prevent its growth.

What will be the right step I need to take?  Truthfully, I'm afraid having a surgery.

Thanks,
Joan

"All things considered"
If the nodule is less then 1 cm, and is not hypoechoic the follow up with ultrasound can be considered.
If nodule is larger, and biopsy indicated it is benign it can be monitored for growth.
If biopsy indicated follicular neoplasm surgery is necessary as FNA cannot discriminate between follicular adenoma [benign] and follicular carcinoma [malignant]

How large is it?  What exactly the biosy report said?  Did the doc say why surgery is recommended even though it's "not cancerous" and "not visible".  I would think there must be other risk factors leading to the doc's recommendation.  Nevertherless a 2nd opinion with another Endo is never a bad idea before undergoing surgery.
