thyroid nodule

I WOULD LIKE TO NO IS A THYROID VERY SERIOUS I WHEN AND HAD A URASOUND THE NODULE IS 6MM MY DOCTOR PUT ME ON HOROME MEDICINE AND LOOKING FOR MORE ANSWERS AND IM GOING TO HAD A THYROID UPTAKE & SCAN CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT A UPTAKE SCAN MEAN .DO THE NODULE COME FROM SMOKING. THANK YOU CHERYL

I am new to this whole Thyroid nodule thing.. I have been going through the process for about 6 weeks.. Some people feel no effects of nodules but some feel effects. I have been very fatigued and having a hard time swallowing. My nodules have grown 1 cm in a month; now they are over 2 cm..
I had an ultrasound first then a Nuclear scan which tells you whether the nodules are hot or cold.. If it is cold they would maybe do a FNA but I think the nodules needs to be bigger for them to do that.  It is a step by step process..  SOunds like you have a good dr who put you on meds already.
According to my research, There is no known reason of what causes nodules or the effects of them.

6.0mm is too small to do an FNA on .. >1.0 is the standard.  I elected not to have the scan because it may give more unanswers than answers since I wasn't going to have that side removed w/o a biopsy first.  So do keep that in mind, too as you move fwd. According to Dr. Lupo on our expert forum they don't think synthroid type drugs will do anything to shrink an existing nodule.  I am on them too for a 4.0mm nodule on my intact side

From what I can find - thyroid nodules have nothing to do with smoking.
